ICYMI: Video Shows Dried Mango Product Infested with Worms

This reader-submitted video shows a dried mango product swarming with worms and eggs.

The video is being published after consulting with a Rav in Lakewood.

Note: The Bedatz Hechsher on the package states to check the product – this is apparently why.

  1. You can’t blame the Badatz or anyone else on this one. At the time of packaging it probably was clean. But from packaging until it gets into the consumer hand. It sometimes may get infested due to negligent storage.
However, the Badatz did consider this possibility and prints to please recheck before using.
    Kol halved to them.

  2. One question you could ask is how old was the product? Many insects come in if it’s old and not stored properly. I heard from a kashrus organization that many heimeshe companies will do a special run every few months and then can sit in a warehouse until it’s ready to be shipped (which may be a reason why it says “Raui Livdok” as it didn’t contain bugs when they produced it but they may develop as time goes on).
So several things here to consider- how long was it in the warehouse and how long did it sit on the shelf in the store and how long did it sit in the cabinet until opening for consumption

  3. As a kashrus professional who has been in the industry for almost 40 years, I say that these videos, while they serve a purpose to show people about what can happen, really do a lot more harm than good.

Did the person even bother to mention in the video what the lot number was so that other consumers can happen to take a look and see if they have this and appropriate action can be taken? The answer is NO, so now people are going to run and take whatever it is that they have on their shelves and run back to the stores or freak out about it some people for no reason whatsoever.

So instead, what they did was to besmirched the certification as well as the manufacturer of the product. I say the people who made the video are going straight to a place very hot. TALK ABOUT LOSHON HORA AND RECHILUS.

Posting a video like this without pertinent information, other than hey mommy look what I found, is completely and totally irresponsible!

    SHAME ON ALL INVOLVED!

  4. I’m sorry mr kashrus pro, but I believe, in my humble opinion, that you are wrong. I believe the person (s) who put out this video did not mean to malign the company, but to bring an awareness to the little print that it says it is raui livdok despite the Bdatz hechsher BECAUSE it can get infested AFTER it is manufactured. Sometimes people don’t see the statement or don’t really believe that they need to. And they are showing that DESPITE the lot number ALL need to be checked. Because it may not be JUST this lot number it can be ANY lot number, as this can, and obviously does happen, after it leaves the hands of the hashgacha.
Why is it that to most posts there is someone who is going to be nasty or worse in their comments? People don’t do things to be mean or bad. If you were nervous that this wasn’t meant lishma, or you felt it should have been worded a little bit differently, you can say so, but don’t scream loshon hora or shame on all involved. Rather maybe explain where you feel they could have done it in a better way
