As drought conditions worsen across New Jersey, firefighters are working to contain multiple wildfires that have burned approximately 500 acres statewide in the past week. Firefighters in Lakewood and surrounding towns have responded to dozens of smaller fires, while larger fires continue to rage across the state.
Major fires in the past week include:
- Industrial Wildfire – Livingston, NJ: 192 acres burned.
- Evesham Wildfire – Evesham, NJ: 40 acres burned.
- Halloween Wildfire – Downe, NJ: 120 acres burned; ongoing with 75% containment.
- Craigmeur Lookout Wildfire – Rockaway, NJ: 202 acres burned; ongoing with 85% containment.
Lakewood Fire Chief Yahr told TLS, “During these red flag warnings, we urge residents not to have any outdoor fires. The dry conditions make it extremely dangerous, and we need everyone’s cooperation to prevent new fires from starting.”
The Southard Fire Department (Howell) posted a clear warning for those considering ignoring the restrictions: “Should you choose to ignore the restrictions and ignite an outdoor fire anyway, you could be subject to summons from a local law enforcement agency, and/or the New Jersey DEP/NJFFS. This means that even in a legal and approved fire pit, it is currently illegal to light a fire. The restriction even includes charcoal cooking devices. You are only permitted to use propane, electricity, or natural gas-powered fuel for any outdoor fire or cooking.”
Local officials are warning residents to stay alert, as drought conditions combined with red flag warnings have made the area highly susceptible to further wildfire outbreaks.
Rain is not expected for at least the next week.
