Hundreds in Lakewood and Jackson without power; Reportedly due to pole fire

Hundreds of JCP&L customers in Lakewood and Jackson are without power this evening.

In Lakewood, residents in the area of New England Village, Westgate and surrounding areas are out.

The cause of the outage is reportedly a pole fire on East Veterans Highway.

Power is expected to be restored around 12:30 AM.

  1. So hundreds of people were without electric, yet only a few bothered to call the electric company to report it. My electric went off at 9:17 pm just as I opened up my microwave door to cook something. I was in total darkness, and had to feel my way along walls to get back to my living room where I keep a flashlight. Then I had to locate my electric bill to find out the number to call to report the outage. I phoned JCP and L at 9:25 pm to report the outage, and was told by the recording that my electric would be restored by midnight. I then checked their outage map, and saw that only 9 customers in the Route 528 area had reported outages. Fortunately the power came back on at 9:39 pm.
If your electric goes off, you have to report it. Do not expect your neighbors to do it. The electric company prioritizes restoring power based upon the number of calls it receives for that area. Since this outage was supposedly due to a pole fire, it is probably the reason why power was restored so quickly.
So make sure that you call the electric company the next time–and everytime– the power goes out. As for me, I plan to buy more flashlights, and place them in every room of the house.
