A student at Howell Middle School North brought a 3-D printed imitation firearm to school this morning, officials say.

“At this time, there are no safety concerns regarding any students,” Howell Police said. “The investigation is ongoing and has been transferred to our Detective Bureau for further investigation.”

Police confirmed the imitation firearm is inoperable and non-functioning. The student had created the item and transported it on a school bus before entering the school, where it was subsequently reported to staff.

3-D printers make it easy to create imitation firearms using affordable machines, basic skills, and downloadable design files. In just hours, plastic replicas can be produced, though they’re typically non-functional without extra parts.
