PHOTOS: Two wanted suspects were apprehended by Howell Police today in Lakewood following a foot pursuit.
Howell Police received a call this afternoon from Wal-Mart advising of a shoplifting in progress. Upon being approached by loss prevention officers, the two suspects dropped the merchandise and fled in a vehicle – a 2000 four-door Toyota Corolla.
Off-duty Howell Police officers working a road construction detail on Lanes Mill Road were able to observe the vehicle traveling south on Rt.9 and radioed other officers, Captain Andrew Kudrick tells TLS.
Patrolman John Lopez #196 observed the suspect vehicle enter the jug handle for Estelle Lane, but upon attempting a stop of the vehicle, the driver fled south on Rt.9 completely ignoring Ptlm. Lopez. The driver continued into Lakewood, where he cut across Rt.9 and entered the Shell gas station.
The driver continued to drive recklessly through a strip mall along Kennedy Boulevard. As the pursuit was terminated by Sgt. Rhein, the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The passenger was immediately detained by Ptlm. Lopez.
The driver of the vehicle was subsequently located and arrested by Patrolman Riaz Motani #189 a few blocks away. He was identified as 49-year-old Neptune resident Sammy Davis.
The passenger was identified as 49-year-old Asbury Park resident Anita Benson.
Both were charged with Shoplifting and Conspiracy to Commit Shoplifting. Davis was also charged with Eluding (2nd degree) and numerous motor vehicle offenses. Davis’ driver’s license was also suspended and both were “wanted’” by several jurisdictions for outstanding criminal and motor vehicle offenses. Davis and Benson were placed in Monmouth County Correctional Institution in default of the $90,000 bail issued by the Superior Court Judge.

I love good policing!
Howell police are superb. They are well trained & very professional. The whole HPD works like a well-ouled machine. Theyre also v/ adept at using radar guns. Go HPD !!
Anita up to her old tricks. I caught her back in December. What an idiot.
So why was she let out Mr Foot !? We have to wait untill s/1 gets killed from reckless driving through malls before we throw away the key !?!? Whose the idiot !
Unfortunately she has to go through the system and we all know how that works. The case I’m involved with hasn’t gone to trial yet. I believe she got bailed out on mine. This time the bail is higher so I’m thinking she’ll be there a while.
It’s not Mr Foot, it’s Officer Foot, and she was let out by the judicial system, not the police force.
Just wandering is HPD permitted to make an arrest in lakewood or they need to contact LPD?
If you read the story it says CRIMES were committed within Howell Township and then a vehicle pursuit, which led into Lakewood. On Duty law enforcement officers are allowed to take action anywhere in the state. They are not required to stop at the town border and let them go. GREAT JOB to the HTPD who are always on top of things.
way to go, police!
