How to Donate Used Clothing to help Others

by the Pick-up Gemach. We suggest you sort with at least three garbage bags in front of you.

1) labeled “Kids”
2) Men’s and Women’s stylish current clothing and shoes
3) labeled “bins” i.e. Jewish bins which collect clothing sold per pound to benefit Jewish Orgs (NOT DEJA NEW) or Non-Jewish bins supporting acceptable causes

Definions:
Kids-stylish, current, unstained, in excellent condition.
Mens and Womens-again, up to date, excellent condition, to drop off by a local gmach or resale store, such as Deja New/Serendipity.
Bins or Garbage- anything stained, zippers broken, out of date, pilled. If you wouldn’t give to a friend, don’t give to anyone in this town.

Why?
Yidden in your town like to look bakovidik. Although it’s hard to part with your clothing or it’s just easier to throw everything into a bunch of bags and get rid of it, it really makes it much harder for everyone else. A bit of effort on your part can make a huge difference. It tires out volunteers to be sorting out the unusable clothing and be hauling it away. A couple of shmattahs from each person makes huge heaps of unusable clothing which have to be hauled away. Even worse, Deja New has to pay to haul all the garbage (the stuff that no one’s going to wear). We tell people to only give clothing you’d give a friend because that’s where it’s going. No items with holes, stained, ripped outdated or washed out. No broken, torn, old shoes. All that should be going to bins where the clothing is sold per pound to benefit a Jewish organization or to dress poor people in Africa.
We thank you for your time in advance.

About us…
The pickup Children’s Gemach services families of Bnei Torah in Lakewood. The Pick-Up Children’s Gemach was started out of need for stylish, good-condition children’s clothing, for families of Lakewood Bnei Torah who would appreciate used clothing if it was stylish and current. All the work is done by volunteers so we don’t have to charge the recipients for used clothing.

1) Put your current, lightly used children’s clothing in a garbage bag, sealed tightly (to protect from rain) after following instructions above on how to sort.

2) Label it “Gmach.”

3) Text 848-525-6961 after you put it on your porch (or other specified location), with your address.

It will be picked up within the next 24-48 hours by one of our volunteers. Please keep it on your porch until it is picked up.

There is no charge for pick-ups

We take:

Excellent condition, stylish children’s clothing

We may possibly take some men’s white wrinkle free/iron free shirts in popular sizes if in excellent condition and men’s new black shoes

    • I believe that H&M takes small bags of cloth/scraps/fabric for recycling and in exchange you get a 15% off coupon for each bag. Check with the local H&M stores.

  1. to make sure it’s not supporting missionary activity but try AMVETS–bin by john st., supports vets. There are Planet Aid bins but you must make sure they don’t support missionary orgs. I don’t have any info on them. There’s also Sherriffs Assoc. bins by Todd Plaza. That should be okay also.
