In its fourth action to fix a problem with an air bag that deploys so forcefully it can injure or kill a driver, Honda announced late on Monday that it was recalling 833,000 more vehicles. Honda has recalled almost 1.7 million vehicles since 2008 because of the problem. But in a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda said that only about 2,400 of the 833,000 vehicles in the newest recall pose a hazard.
The company said that about 2,400 vehicles involved in crashes apparently received repairs in which the previously recalled defective air bags were installed, rather than the correct units. The automaker has tried to track down all the potentially affected vehicles, it said, but has not been successful, hence the large recall.
The newly recalled models are some 2001-2 Accords and Civics; the 2002 Odyssey; the 2002-3 CR-V, some 2002-3 Acura 3.2 TLs and the 2003 Acura 3.2 CL.
Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, wrote in an e-mail that the automaker was aware of “a small number of injuries and two fatalities” related to the air bags. He said those were not recent and did not set off this week’s action. He declined to provide more details, citing pending litigation. More in NY Times.
