Homeless people crowd shelter in Lakewood as deep freeze sets in

Dozens of homeless people from in and around Lakewood have filled to capacity the shelter in Lakewood put in place due to the extreme weather, Police Chief Greg Meyer tells TLS.

The center, on 4th Street, is one of several listed by the County as a shelter to assist in the event of a ‘Code Blue’ – the code for extreme weather.

Once a Code Blue Alert from the County Office of Emergency Management is released, information regarding the availability of weather related services, provided by non-profit and volunteer organizations, is offered by the Ocean County Department of Human Services.

The Chief says homeless people from Lakewood and around the County have used every bed available at the shelter.

A ‘Deep Freeze’ has settled in, and expected to keep temperatures below freezing for the next few days. Snow is possible this weekend as well, with accumulations of approximately an inch.

  1. I had a worker who uses the shelter.

It’s sad he makes $15 an hour and he’s homeless – the reason why waste money on rent.

It’s crazy he can afford a room but sleeps in unlocked cars etc. Instead

This shelter saves his life by not having him freeze to death.
