Homeless Man Injured After Tent Goes Up In Flames

A homeless man was injured Thursday evening when his tent went up in flames, officials say, At about 10 PM police and the Lakewood Fire Departments responded to the intersection of Hurley Avenue and Cedarbridge Avenue for reports of a tent on fire, and upon arrival found a tent fully engulfed.

The tent’s occupant made it out, but suffered burns and smoke inhalation.

The patient was transported by EMS Paramedics to Jersey Shore Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

The fire is believed to have started from a heating element, although officials could not confirm that. TLS

  1. I know it’s mean, but my first instinct when reading the headline was to smile…

What’s it going to take to finally get these people off of Cedar Bridge?

  2. All I see is a bunch of people complaining on here its very sad that people is this town are homeless and have to live in tent city so be for you start saying we should just shut it down think of how you can HELP TO MAKE IT BETTER LIKE HELP WITH HOUSING I am pretty sure the ones complaining have a decent place to call home. Smh

  3. Tent city is a big problem and i agree with frustrated citizen that it’s so furstrating to see this happen every time the weather turns colder. But, #1, how can you smile about someone being injured? That’s worse than just mean.

  4. I’m no fan of tent city and its’ occupants but as a human being I do have compassion & certainly would not gain any sense of satisfaction knowing someone lost all that they have. That’s just plain wrong.

  5. What you rather do with them? The homeless have made Lakewood their home. Would you rather kick them out and send them to Brick or Toms River? where do you suppose they can go without being harrassed by the locals that think they are a nuisance. Yes there are those that don’t want our help and want to be able to call a tent their home..but mostly we have neglected to care for our neighbors..Lakewood is growing by leaps and bounds..what happens when its someone you know that is homeless? Will you let them come stay with you? Live in your house or apt for a long period of time? What then? Homelessness is a growing problem in the entire state and country. People can not afford to live in these big expensive houses..and there is nothing cheap in Lakewood anymore..anything that would have been cheap is bulldozed down and there is a mini-mansion in its place..when does it end?
    Just saying

  6. Its always so easy to judge people when you don’t have to walk in their shoes, isn’t it. I wonder how some of you would respond if you did?

  7. Why does the person have to be Jewish for you to be willing to help a person out,Iam in dieing need of a two/three bed room house and I have a two yr old can anyone help….lol

  8. Just bulldoze the place! Too many of these people have been offered proper housing and turned it down. Brainless. This town hasn’t got the (moderated) to do it. They are ILLEGAL!!!!

  9. to # 12 Ocean Inc has an affordable housing project off warren ave with 2 and 3 bedroom condos , you would like it there as thier are no jews renting there … it can be your oasis of hate

  10. “Oasis of hate”- are you serious #15? All the person asked is why the homeless have to be Jewish in order for anyone to care about them. I find its a very valid question.

& #9 Just sayin’- Great post! Its people like you who give me hope for the future

  11. There are two individuals who were born Jewish and practice Judaism at tent city, (moderated), however they are not Orthodox. I do want to make it clear this fire was not at tent city, as in many towns there are homeless men and women who set up their own tents to stay warm, this man did NOT live at tent city.

  12. I remarked about Tent City at last week’s Township Committee Meeting. I simply inquired if any progress was made. The response from the TC was silence.

After the meeting, as I was leaving, I was approached by Attorney, Jan Wouters, who told me that if I wanted to make a difference, I should o to the County for help.

I told Attorney Wouters that the Court is looking for PLAN B. Plan B is where reasonable steps are taken to address the needs and/or issues facing the homeless that provides a reasonable way out of the woods.

Many of the residents of Tent City are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. This means that it is beyond the means of Lakewood Township to address the issue alone.

There is a need for County and State intervention to address and hopefully re-mediate the situation.

Perhaps some or many could return to a productive life, if given the opportunity to do so. It takes skill, money, and patience to help those that cannot or will not help themselves.

Also, it is good to keep in mind that “There but for the grace of God, go I” They are in my prayers.

  13. If you want to make contact with the Jewish woman , come into Tent City during day light hours, better earlier before they leave to do errands or work. There are approximately 6 persons of the Jewish faith, so if you can help any of them it would be appreciated. If every faith came in to Tent City and took care of it’s own – no one would be homeless . (Please understand that not all the people in Tent City want help either -but you can ask for teh Jewish woman and see if she will accept your help) . Any help is appreciated but please proceed with caution in some instances -not everyone in TC is bad, not all are good either .

  14. Please don’t publish names of people in Tent City without their permission, many are embarassed by their living situation and would rather conceal their identities so future employers dont hold it against them. Thank you. Because I know of them personally and they would not want their identity disclosed.

  15. I used to work in a store where the people from tent city would frequently visit. The jewish lady can be seen usually with another lady and a kinda hunchback man who wears a yarmulka. They like soda cans. They’re smelly and seem like they’ve lost their minds, but when it would come to jewish holiday season and wed sell holiday items they’d hold them up with tears in their eyes and remenisce to me about their childhood back in new york growing up with strong memories of a warm faith…. If u can reach out to that little spark in their neshamos past the smelly past the awkward social habits and weak physical mannerisms u will be doing great things..
