The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security has increased its threat level assessment of white supremacist groups from moderate to high. The change was announced in a report released by Homeland Security’s state agency office.
The increased vigilance by law enforcement on white supremacist groups comes amid an increase in violent actions by some members of those groups, including a New Jersey man who allegedly worked with a neo-Nazi network to vandalize synagogues in the Midwest.
The report said that threats from anti-government, black separatist, and sovereign citizen extremists were moderate, while threats from overseas terror organizations such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda were low. The report states that although the inability of overseas terrorists to conduct attacks in the United States has lowered their threat level, the group will likely continue to operate as it did in the past, using sleeper cells to commit violence on US citizens.
“The ever-changing threat landscape in New Jersey and around the country requires us to adjust our strategies to anticipate new threats while remaining ready to combat those already existing,” said Jared Maples, Director of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness. “We will continue to develop and share the latest intelligence alongside our partners to support counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and preparedness efforts throughout the State.”
