A driver and hitchhiker were stopped by police today and issued warnings, TLS has learned.
The driver was pulled over 7th Street this morning, and issued a warning, together with the hitchhiker.
Police have in the past issued summonses for these offenses.
The statue (title :39) provides that they have to be in the roadway in order to be in violation of the law. Standing on the sidewalk or on the curb is permitted.

Good. It’s dangerous
We got to place a stop on this dangerous hitch hiking business!! Please dont hitch or pick anyone up.. Besides for safety, dangerous and chillul Hashem
Why not b!! do a mitzvah when u see buchrim hitching in the heat or rain! When ure kids r hitching u want then getting rides! Do the same!!
The fact is hitchiking is illegal. Since it is illegal not to mention unusual, there is a chillil hashem when people are falgging down rides on every street corner.
I understand people waiting for rides on corners to get to yeshiva, but now you have kids flagging down cars everywhere just to take them a block or 2 which they can easily walk.
Aside for being lazy, it teaches the to be dependent on others. I would never ask anyone to do something for me that i could easily do myself and taise my children to do the same.
I have no problem giving acquaintances a ride if they’re headed in the same direction I’m already going to. (Sometimes I’ll even go out of my way if I have a few extra minutes.) But, I do have a problem stopping for them in middle of the road or near street corners/intersections – which can cause a serious hazard to the ongoing vehicular traffic.
On those occasions when I offer a ride to people I know, I make sure to pull out of the roadway and over to the curbside – and at a safe distance away from any street corners.
It’s just common sense.
actually I dont want my kid picked up. Please dont pick up my child if he is hitchhiking. There is always buses and transportation provided and they should just use it even if it takes them longer.
I don’t want my kids hitching. I’ve had countless near misses and it’s the police s responsibility to enforce all the laws to protect children from their parents when they encourage dangerous activity.
Hitchhiking is illegal it’s that simple, no one should be hitchhiking it can be dangerous. If you need a ride call a friend the night before and ask for help getting somewhere. The law is the law.
I was pulled over for this and got a ticket. Hitchhiker was arrested for an outstanding warrant stemming from an old unpaid dmv violation.
Very happy to give a ride when I can and I ll continue to do so!!
I have a suggestion that may solve the danger issue as well as be within the law to designate certain main corners where bochurim can wait on the sidewalk and when drivers pass by they can Pull over to offer a ride as arranged on squanqum rd going to ny
I will be Dan l’kaf Zchus, that people here are NOT selfish people! Where was it ever heard not to give a fellow person hitch, even goyim used to give hitches.
The law is unconstitutional!
How can take anyone I feel like in my car!!!!!
I agree, there are bochrim who are totally irresponsible, they stand in middle of the street. I make my business to stop and tell them to move to the side. I only pickup bochrim by going off to the side, not to block traffic.
Its pretty clear to me what creates the divide in this topic: those who have sons in mesivta & everyone else. If u have kids in mesivta, far from ur house & ur son missed the bus or has to come home sometimes, ur pro hitching. Everyone else is anti. And thats it.
First off with all the congestion in this town, pulling over doesn’t help the flow of traffic. With the town working on the new transportation system and the fact that it’s illegal (mind you the majority of the individuals hitching are only looking to go a couple of blocks, which is laziness at best) the cops should do their jobs. Kudos to the cop for issuing a warning…..
I almost hit buchrim standing half in the street giving the thumbs up a lot of times . A little to aggressive and almost begging for a tragedy ch”v. Not a god idea .
I don’t let my son hitch (not sure if he listens to me though) because I worry about who’s picking him up. That being said let’s stop with the legalities. It’s only illegal when your in the street. If your on the sidewalk it’s legal. That just shows you that the law makes no sense. If it’s dangerous on the street it’s dangerous on the sidewalk too. I understand we have to obey the law but it doesn’t make it safer as I’ve said many times.
I have plenty or relatives in mesivta and I am anti-hitching. I do not allow my son to hitch. It is absolutely unsafe in today’s times to have these boys get in to any random car. Yes it’s the child’s responsibility not to miss a bus but it’s a parents responsibility to keep their children safe! Hitching is illegal for many reasons. So parents that are inconvenienced at times and need to take their children somewhere even though it’s out of the way should prefer doing that then g-d forbid need to tend to them for other thingsthat can happen to them if they hitch!
THis is one of the laws that has a real reason behind it. Everyone gets bent out of shape when someone is going around trying to lure kids into a car, but when boys just a few years older are hitching with who knows who it’s ok?
A boy can lo aleinu be kidnapped just as easily thorugh hitching. Hopefully this mass transit bussing thing will be the answer to boys getting around town as it grows. – Till then I think it is really bdieved to pick boys up and condone the whole process.
Parents are busy… true. So arrange a carpool and split it with neighbors. Kids don’t belong picking up rides on the streets.
i used to hitch hike all day, and as a result of standing sometimes for hours i cant help myself but to give anyone a ride where ever they need to go!!!!! and yes, the driver should make sure he isnt blocking any traffic and should be safe!!!
H-Shem spelled with capital H!
should have read without his parental permisision
