HISTORIC – FIRST REPORT: In Effort To Help Shidduch Crisis, Multiple Senior American Roshei Yeshiva Commit to Sending Bachurim to Eretz Yisroel Earlier

As first reported by TLS earlier this year, American Roshei Yeshivah are beginning to send Bachurim to Eretz Yisroel earlier in an effort to help bridge the Shidduch gap and bring about more Shidduchim.

As extensively reported on TLS, there are currently over 3,000 single girls in Shidduchim in Lakewood and its immediate surrounding communities.

But the first breakthrough came in January, when a Rosh Yeshivah of a prominent Yeshivah in Lakewood gave a lengthy Shmuz to more than 200 Bachurim in his Yeshivah regarding the plight of the many single girls in our midst and the age gap crisis that has to a large degree both caused and continues to exacerbate the crisis. It was then that the Rosh Yeshivah announced that his Yeshivah was nixing its 4th year Bais Medrash.

Now, multiple senior American Roshei Yeshivah have joined the cause of easing the crisis, TLS has learned.

Rav Mottel Dick this week announced that he will be sending his Bachurim to Eretz Yisroel earlier – for now in 4th year Bais Medrash Sukkos, but soon in third year Pesach.

Rav Mendel Slomowitz announced again last night that he will be sending the Bachurim in the third year Bais Medrash.

The other senior Roshei Yeshivah who committed to sending the Bachurim in the third year Bais Medrash, are; Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, Rav Elya Chaim Swerdloff, and Rav Shloime Feivel Schustal. All of these Roshei Yeshivah will be sending the Bachurim for this Sukkos Zman, beginning now.

In addition, TLS has learned, that other younger American Roshei Yeshivah are in the process of committing as well, and we’ll announce them as they are confirmed.

In part of their commitment, the Roshei Yeshivah are going to request that post-seminary girls wait a bit upon their return from seminary. Details of that development have not yet been finalized.

  1. How is that helping? That is when they went to Eretz Yisroel until now? They should be sending after first year when he is about 19 and get him married by 20!

      • today’s boys have been in “Bais Medrash” since 14, they didn’t study for regents, haven’t been to a basketball court on a regular basis, and have been learning “distraction free” on a full time basis for longer than the average post-Eretz Yisroel BMG bochur did by the time he was 24.

  2. And the girls should wait?
Sadly, they do a lot of waiting.
    But to wait intentionally? No.
And, by the way: not to forget Who really makes shidduchim.
    May H send yeshuos.

    • Did you actually just say “no”?? Did you ready that the RY, who are steeped in Torah, and consult with daas Torah (R’ Moshe Hillel was a key player) on these decisions, and you flippantly write no??? Unbelievable! עיקבתא דמשיחא חוצפה יסגא. Every 2 cent nobody feels entitled to an opinion for or against gedolim. Infuriating!

      • You presume every detail originates from Daas Torah, when it is well meaning askanim who are soliciting support for their shtadlanus from rabbonim, who may or may not agree with every prat.
So get off your high horse, and consult you own Rav.

      • You answered extremely sharp to Malky. We all have no idea if she read very carefully and slowly this entire article. Maybe she missed a few important details. Also maybe she was not convinced that the Rav or Rosh HaYeshiva actually said exactly those words. Sometimes a Rav can say something and two separate people can hear the same sentence in two different ways. To actually knock her and talk so sharply when you truly do not know exactly what she truly knew before she made her comment, basically we can say that maybe you are the one that is lacking in proper Middos. I thought we have a Mitzva to judge another fellow Yid in a favorable manner and to give him the benefit of the doubt. Why are we so quick to attack another person?
אל תדין את חבירך עד שתגיע למקומו

        • I was not judging. One can’t judge someone they don’t know. The statement is inherently offensive. The poster quotes a statement brought from the Roshei Hayeshiva, and just says no. That is inherently offensive. Are there mitigating justifications? Does the poster happen to be privy to “inside information”, doubtful, but we can’t know. That not withstanding and without clarification, the statement itself is rebellious. And, get off “my high horse”, I don’t even have a horse! I am merely outraged and the denigration of roshei hayeshiva.

          • Sounds like you did not read or comprehend the article properly.
            Or my explanation to you.
You seem to enjoy your self-righteous outrage. Let me refer you to the mashal of the mouse, the cat and the balabusta.
As if it will help: this is about askanus of askanim to help the girls. The Daas Torah, especially as pertains to girls waiting is unclear. Despite the references to the Roshei Yeshiva. Much is said in the name of Gedolim that they never said. I rest my case.

      • The reason that there is a shortage of shadchanim is because they aren’t paid enough. A shadchan as to work so hard for a tiny chance of getting a tiny amount of money.

The reason that they aren’t paid enough is because people apparently aren’t desperate to get married.

If people would be desperate to get married, though, we wouldn’t need shadchanim, as there are enough online frum dating websites to replace shadchanim.

So, ultimately, the problem is that people aren’t desperate to get married quickly.

  3. Studies have show that the age gap theory is not a likely contribution factor to the “shidduch crisis”.

The same studies have shown that hashkafa shifting is more likely the cause of the mismatched gender ratio.

Significantly more boys than girls who were raised “yeshivish” shifted to the left than girls (i.e. became more “modern”) leaving not enough boys in the yeshivish community who fit the criteria that girls are looking for.

    • when you get up early for davening you make the zman, when you keep hitting the snooze button then when you finally wake up there are much more mafri’im, so too with shidduchim, if society will run towards the parsha with zrizus then more people will make it, when everyone is waiting and “chillin’ around” until everyone else seems ready, then all sorts of mafri’im find their way into the maze.

    • 100%…..
I am astounded and shocked by how so many boys from frum yeshivish homes, schools, and neighborhoods look like Puerto Ricans with their shaved hair cuts around their heads and overgrown center (my sons included).
They cause their parents (myself included) unimaginable pain and suffering and are told to live with it because that’s “what other bochurim are doing” never once considering the shame and pain they cause their parents who are embarrassed to call them their children…..have to stop myself from crying every time I see my own children…..but they simply do not care.
Their desire to look “with it” overrides their parent’s endless pain and at the same time destroying their chances of a normal shidduch with a bas yisroel.

  4. Wow! This is really a huge breakthrough. Most of these Yeshivos were generally sending the boys to E”Y 4th year Pesach. This is a huge deal.

  5. I’ve heard many people mention on this forum about taking multiple wives…

If every Jewish male were to take 3-4 wives, this whole crisis would be over in 24 hours.

  6. What a Tzaddik this Rabbi Slomovics is!

He could have said, let’s first see what they do as far as telling to the girls to wait, and after that I will act based on what I see from the girl’s side.

But instead, He is going ahead and acting first and decisively, despite the fact that we have not seen even one add in the newspapers or anywhere explaining to the girls to wait with dating till a year after seminary for their own good.

I hope the community appreciates R’ Slomovics and R’ Mordechai Dick’s sacrifices by reciprocating with large donations to his Yeshiva.

R’ Solomovic’s should never have to go out on his own to raise money ever again after this.

    Long Time Shadchan

      • Sorry. And spell check for “shandah” next time.

These Rosh Yeshivas should be rewarded financially for the courageous steps they are taking.

And I know it from the inside that it’s the first year bais medresh that is really being cut out and, in several Yeshivas, this first year has its own rebbe, who is essentially the one that’s being let go. And what about the boys who are changing their own schedule on preferences, they should get credit as well.

  7. With Roshei Yeshiva Sending Bachurim to Israel Earlier In Order To Resolve ‘Shidduch Crisis’, New Crisis Arises, “The Passport, Socks, Toothbrush and Nosh Crisis”
With prominent Roshei Yeshiva announcing their decision to send their students to Israel earlier than usual – in an effort to resolve the Shidduch Crisis – a new crisis has arisen in the bachurim community: ‘The Passport, Socks, Toothbrush and Nosh Crisis’.
“I’ve suddenly been told by the hierarchy that I’ve got to pack up my bags, leave the yeshiva, and head out to the Holy Land to continue my studies,” said Gershon, a 21-year old veteran of his yeshiva. “Problem is, I don’t have a passport yet, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to procure one in time for the next semester.”
Askanim have been alerted to the latest crisis via the round-the-clock phone calls they’ve been receiving from anxious bachurim and nervous parents who fear the bachurim will be left in the cold, passportless, with no yeshiva to learn in next semester.
However, prominent Roshei Yeshiva are now mulling the option of prolonging the Shidduch crisis a bit longer in an effort to solve the newest ‘Crisis’.
“We’re not shipping off the bachurim to Israel just yet,” said one prominent Rosh Yeshiva, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity. “We’re asking the bachurim to utilize the next several months of their free time procuring their passports, purchasing new socks, shoes, toothbrushes, plenty of soap and an abundant supply of tzeida laderech nosh – and then, and ONLY then – when they are fully prepared with the necessary documents, shoes, socks, toothbrushes and nosh – do we plan on shipping them off to the Holy Land.”
“If all goes well,”the Rosh Yeshiva added, “we will not only solve ‘The Shidduch Crisis’, we’ll also solve ‘The Passport Crisis’, ‘The Shoes, Socks & Toothbrush Crisis’ and ‘The Tzeida Laderech Nosh Crisis’, all in one fell swoop! That’s an accomplishment for the ages!”

  9. People have 20-24 years to keep their eyes open for shidduchim for their children. If people would look around their own communities instead of searching cross country for “better and richer” more single girls would have a chance.

    • Really now. Please explain why that is true and how you expect the smaller population of 23 and 24 year old boys to pair up with a larger population of 19 and 20 yr old girls?

  10. Nebach on the majority of the asinine commenter above. If you unfortunately never got to the point in elementary or high school to understand that if an older population consistently marries into a younger population in a situation where there is significant population growth year over year , then you are suffering from a crisis of your own. It has everything to do with age and nothing at all to do with anything else. Just do the math.

    • just because people are writing that “it has already been debunked” without providing any reference of when it was debunked and by whom?
meanwhile the numbers keep coming back at us and they speak for themselves, they tell a story not just of how many not yet married but also the amount of girls who have not had any dates a few years after seminary.

  11. Only a few will listen, and even they will all listen it will not help because that’s not the problem. The cause of this problem is what the all the girls schools and seminaries brain wash the girls & too many boys going off of the derech of which no one will admit or hear it.

  12. True that it may not be the reason for the shidduch crisis. But I personally heard R’ Slomowitz say that any hishtadlus that we can do we must do. So enough with this narrative of “studies show the age gap is not the reason for the shidduch crisis”. That’s not the point – to try and change the world and mess with the master shadchin. The point is to do whatever hishtadlus we can do even if it may not be the main reason and be the biggest help.

  13. For anyone who claims that age is not the factor please explain how a smaller population of boys (23,24) can physically match up with a larger population of girls (19,20) that were born 3 or 4 years later. The population grows at a significant percentage each year and therefore assuming 50 50 boys and girls are born approximately each year when you match them up it can’t work. Anyone who says this is not true or it is debunked etc… but fails to answer this comprehensively is being disingenuous or pushing their own agenda without being open to addressing reality. I encourage thoughtful responses that directly respond to this question.

    • You first must understand the root cause of something in order to give solutions. Are you claiming the reason that there are more girls single is due to reference calls? What does that have to do with an uneven amount of people available? Or maybe just maybe see what Shmuel wrote above

  14. The real reason guys go later, is because they are waiting for a spot to open in their short list of “top” yeshivos. So they wait and wait, until 4th year pesach when they finally realized that they have to go somewhere else. Maybe teaching guys that Brisk and the like aren’t the only yeshivos will get them to go earlier.

  15. I know I’m a little late in the game here regarding answering this letter.
Just saying if your in the shadchen game for the money you should leave it go get a different job.
