Jacob Ostreicher, the American businessman incarcerated in Bolivia with no formal charges for over 18 months, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning – the first scheduled appearance since the high-profile Bolivian arrests resulting from the recent extortion scandal.
The Eldeber Bolivian newspaper reports that Ostreicher’s court hearing will take place before a three-judge appeals panel. Officials hope the court will order him released on the grounds that no credible evidence has been presented against him.
Approximately 27 previous scheduled hearings were cancelled.
Attorney Yimmy Montano told the media that three aspects will be evaluated at the hearing: the material truth, 1,427 documents which were not valued correctly by earlier prosecutors and judges, and Ostreicher’s State of health.
In the recent weeks, as reported on TLS, seven high-profile Bolivian officials – including the Judge who ordered Ostreicher in Prison – were arrested on charges of extortion revolving around the Ostreicher case.
On Friday, TLS posted a newly-released video of Ostreicher speaking from his hospital bed, where he remains due to his deteriorated health and diagnosed Parkinson’s disease. TLS.
