Desperate to save as many Covid-19 patients as possible, hospitals across the United States have begun partially relying on a new treatment in which blood plasma from recovered patients are given to sick people.
When one survives an infectious disease like coronavirus, they generally develop antibodies in their blood – proteins made by the body’s immune system that know how to fight the virus. The treatment utilizes blood plasma containing these antibodies to treat patients suffering from the virus by injecting the plasma into the patients, thereby giving them the antibodies necessary to fight off the illness. The blood plasma from one recovered patient can be used to treat three to four sick patients.
Plasma has been successfully used to help patients fight off other illnesses, including the infamous Spanish Flu of 1918, and doctors are hoping that massive numbers of individuals sick with Covid-19 can be cured with the help of blood plasma donations from recovered Covid-19 patients. At least one study has shown very promising results from this treatment, with coronavirus becoming undetectable in five patients after they underwent plasma transfusions.
But to get this treatment up and running, doctors need our help. If you were confirmed to have had Covid-19 or had symptoms of the virus and have since recovered, you now have the opportunity to literally save lives.
