Since taking delivery of their first Thumper last November, Hatzolah has managed to save numerous lives, including the life of a woman just this week. The Thumper, a device designed to deliver consistent CPR chest compressions without the off intervals and to deliver direct current cardioversion during chest compressions, is used on patients who suffer a Cardiac Arrest.
“There’s no question it’s a tremendous asset to the organization”, a veteran Hatzolah members tells TLS.
Although Hatzolah was the first Volunteer Squad in the State of New Jersey to add the lifesaving device to its squad, several NY Hatzolah organizations already own the $15,000 device, including Queens Hatzolah which is now taking delivery of their 9th piece.
Just 6 days after getting their Thumper, Hatzolah used it on their first unresponsive patient, and managed to bring back a pulse. The patient today, is walking around with restored health.
Currently, the one Thumper is stored at one of the 3 Hatzolah garages, and picked up when needed on a call.
Hatzolah tells TLS they hope in the near future to have a Thumper for each garage, which could drastically cut the response time.
See video below of Hatzolah members training with the device last year.
(On Tuesday May 31st, Hatzolah will be holding their annual Evening of Appreciation for women, at Lake Terrace. Tickets for their Chinese Raffle are half price until 11:59 PM tonight). TLS.

Let’s all support this worthy organization!
DC Cardioversion on a CPR device? Something dosen’t sound right there…
And the correct term would be defibrillation, as cardioversion is reserved for lower joule settings, typically in a non-arrest situation.
This post is misleading. From the few times we see a story about Hatzalah doing their great lifesaving work – one would be led to believe that that’s when it happens. Not true. Almost daily the dedicated members are called to help stroke or seizure victims, countless types medical issues and trauma and even -NON-THUMPER CPR calls. I’m not asking for a daily or weekly scorecard, but keep in mind -Kol Hamosif Gorea.
Lakewood Hatzalah – Kol Hakavod!
