PHOTOS & VIDEO: Yesterday, Hatzolah accepted delivery of the first Lucas Thumper to a Volunteer Squad in the State of New Jersey. The Thumper, is a $15,000 device designed to deliver consistent CPR chest compressions without the off intervals, and to deliver direct current cardioversion during chest compressions, and is recommended by the American Heart Association.
Another advantage of the device is, that it reduces the impact of extenuating circumstances on the interruption and quality of chest compressions, such as transport conditions, rescuer fatigue and rescuer experience level.
“We’re very excited about this new machine”, says a Hatzolah member. “It will make our job much easier, should we need to use it”.
Yesterday evening, Hatzolah members gathered at the Heathwood Garage to get a hands-on training on the device by a company instructor.
Although new to Lakewood and to NJ, several Hatzolah squads in NY have already purchased the device, including Hatzolah of Boro Park who currently owns one such device, Hatzolah of Williamsburg owns two, and Hatzolah of Queens owns seven such devices.

This is a perfect use of our Tzedakah. I will IY”H be sending out a check today. Thank you for all you do.
what does this do that a defib cannot?
Please get your facts straight TLS.. Lakewood EMS had thumpers for about 1 year. They were in both responder cars for that time period. Give the praise to the ems dept and hatzolah for the job that they do. Also remember that hatzolah “budget ” is all donatation based where the Ems Dept has municipal budget. SO for the ems dept to buy and maintain one of these thumpers is not cost effective of about 15,000 dollars each..
A Defib is designed to deliver an electric current to the heart. The Lucas thumper is designed to give consistent and continuous chest compressions. They are designed to work hand in hand. Defibrellation after 2 minutes will not be effective without good CPR. Good CPR by itself cannot accomplish anything – it only extends heart function until defibrellation or other advanced cardiac care (such as drugs) is effective.
One of the things that the American Heart Association has been pushing is continuous chest compressions without interruption. This is very difficult to accomplish with human only compressions.
Let’s hope this is never needed and let’s remember that the best equipment in the world is useless without siyata dishmaya.
LEMS / LPD Supporter
Perhaps they are the first “volunteer” squad to get them. LEMS is not volunteer.
get your facts straight first of all it says first vol squad in state second of all if lkwd ems would not get paid so much they could buy 20 of them
To Eli
A defib will deliver a shock to the heart when it is in a rhythm call v-fib and V-tach.These rythyms mean the heart is active, but in a life-threatening, dysfunctional pattern. what this machine does is chest compressions which is necessary to maintain or obtain when there is none, one of these rhythms so that you may be able to use the d-fib. If no compressions are done then the heart will then go a systole or what they call flat line and you will not be able to shock that pt. This machine will continue to do compressions properly and will not get tired. I hope I explained well.
great!! now hatzola can stop accepting members!! the machines will do all the work…
What good does it do if Officer Dennis will stop the Thumper from getting to the call?
all of this negative writing makes a person sick, i think i may have to that thumper revive me.

The flat line heart rhythm (actually the lack thereof) is calles Asystole.
How much does it cost to get more volunteers?
