Sadly there was only a limited number of slots for the class so priority

went to Lakewood First Aid and Lakewood Hatzolah as they operate

the 2 extrication teams in Lakewood. The remaining slots went to

members of the LFD that were also trained EMT’s or members of the

LFD that are already on the extrication team; as well as the firefighters

from Pleasant Plains and Beachwood who brought their extrication

trucks so that we could have 4 trucks with 4 teams going at the same

time. In total there were 4 Lakewood firefighters present, one from

Engine No. 4 who is on Lakewood First Aid and 3 from Engine No. 3 of

which one is a member of Lakewood EMS. From my understanding at

least 3 other Lakewood firefighters were invited who were either EMT’s

or had extrication experience but were unable to attend.

  4. Riding Dirty you sound like a FF who was there. I would like to ask you these question.

    1. Why was there children standing right next to the cars?? You and I both know the dangers extracation (flying glass, bumpers, back window shocks…)

    2. Why were there people that were not wearing gear & eye protectors as seen in the video.

I know it was extremly hot, but still trainig should be done the right way. If some one was hurt because of the lack of proper precautions who is going to cover them.

    Please riding dirty explain.

  5. Lakewood FIre Department was not present because Lakewood Fire Dept. does not handle any extrication calls except as a standby in case a fire were to occur during the process.

I cannot speak in regard to the children who were watching that group but I do agree they either should not have been there or moved back to a safer location, that should have been done by each groups safety officer. My group did not have any children watch us so it was not an issue. However I can tell you that most of the people in the video not wearing gear are the class instructors, the others wearing partial gear e.g. helmets and jackets but no pants or goggles are students whose squads only supplied them with that. I’m not trying to start an argument but in fairness Howell’s first aid squads receive a good deal of money from their township. Lakewood First Aid just scrapes by to cover operating expenses and has no surplus. They cannot afford to purchase new vehicles or new gear for every member. Their ambulances chassis’s are 10 years old and the boxes mounted on them are 20-25 years old with no new vehicle purchases in sight, while from my understanding and observations Howell’s squads receive a new vehicle from the township every 3 years and receive generous donations allowing them to have a surplus. It’s not an excuse for not following safety rules but it also kind of is.

  7. kids were at a pretty safe distance for the most part, they were following the video camera around. its not an answer but the people without proper gear were mostly instructors, a few people werent properly protected and yes they were told to put their gear back on. dont forget the video was for 2 minutes, we were out there for close to 6 hours

    Thank you for your responce.

In the first few moments of the video (just rechecked he is in the picture and on the video right away) there was a gentelman in a black tshirt with a cutter. No gear just a helmet & no goggles.

What i’m saying is, I know it was hot but you have instructors for that reason to tell everyone what to do & dress.

He should have been taken off the drill site untill he follows the rules.

In the video the kids were right by the car, not a safe distance. Again the instuctors are the ones that should have not let them be there.

On the fire line we are always told to be safe. This is an example how NOT TO BE SAFE.

Good luck in all your training, and please be safe..

We (Lakewood First Aid & Emergency Squad No. 25) are a volunteer organization established in 1930, we have no paid members and are not run by the township. Lakewood EMS is a paid department under the township established in the 1970’s. We do share the same building under an agreement with the township but our organizations are completely separate from one another.
