Has The Muster Zone Failed? Day Laborers Afraid Of ICE

empty_muster_zone_3-8-10(Video) (Photo of an empty Muster Zone, taken today) The latest Muster zone, which was set to begin operating April 1st, as reported on TLS, may now have been “a failure” as some merchants have put it. “Clifton Avenue looks like business as usual” said one Merchant. Some ‘Day Laborers’ told us they are afraid to stand in the designated area in fear of being picked up as a group by ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement). Another downtown merchant, who wishes to remain anonymous, emailed TLS this morning asking why the Muster Zone’s opening has been rescheduled to open on June 1st. The merchant added, that they were told by the Police that “Even after June 1st, they are not sure if and how they can enforce it”.

As reported on several occasions on TLS, the new Muster Zone has been set up by the Township Committee in effort to divert the ‘Day Labrorers’ from the Downtown area into one designated area, and serve as an ‘Employment Services Area’.

Watch the video below of ‘Day Laboroers’ expressing their concerns with the new Employment Services Area.

  1. Hey tyrone. We all heard hh make fun of the idea to begin with. I don’t think you read the news you just comment on here without actually seeing what other people say. He publicly stated it. And it was in the app a few times how bad an idea it will be. I don’t follow hh much. But even I knew he was against the idea. It was tried once and failed looks like it did again. Just let them live. What about all the guys hitching? Which I believe is illegal in nj.

  2. Has anyone noticed how totally impossible it is to get out of Sovereign bank now? They blocked the cut through to the parking lot for this and now you are forced to turn onto Route 9 (N or S), which is nearly unthinkable during peak rush hours, at least towards the lake! Someone made ANOTHER BAD IDEA!!!

  3. Does the township committee understand the definition of illegal? Why is the committee supporting illegal activity by building these muster zones and using taxpayers money to build this (and the previous) muster zone. You cant go before the judge and cry foul when you present with dirty hands yourself. Lakewood needs to clean its act up. The town people cry when they see people loitering in the downtown WAITING for work to come there way. Any job most honest people have they have gone out to get it themselves. Professions that wait on street corners looking for work are not what the people of anytown need. Lakewood is harboring a bad element here and its time the committee open its eyes and say enough. I earn my keep honestly and I for one am sick of my honestly earned dollars going to encourage dishonest activity

  4. TLS headline –
Township To Enact Traffic And Safety Regulations For The Downtown
    Feb 19 2010 3:19 pm

“In an effort to ensure the safety of pedestrians and keep traffic flowing in downtown Lakewood, the Lakewood Township Committee has passed two new regulations. The first is an ordinance—no solicitation of employment—that prohibits both pedestrians and motorists from any act indicating their interest in employment. People may no longer stop or stand any place on a road, on the side of a road, or in any areas dedicated for public use, like a median, to signal their interest in being hired…..”

Now all the township has to do is ENFORCE THE ORDINANCE!!!!
Of course, that will be when the “hot place” freezes over.

  5. What a waste of all those parking spots there! I also have the same problem as number 3, – I can’t get out of Sovereign Bank with out having to wait in heavy traffic to get onto Route 9. When the parking lot was open, at least I was able to cut across and then know that I will get my turn to go on to route 9, b/c 2nd Street has a light.

  6. There is a pretty simple solution. If the authorities start ICEing the ones loitering on second street, while looking the other way to those that are in the muster zone, I am sure the word will get out pretty quickly

  7. If we want it to work. We have to only pick up workers from the muster zone. If we still pick them up from Clifton Avenue then why should they switch. Also the sign should be in Spanish. They probably don’t even read English.

  8. #4 amazed; i couldn’t have said it better. for people working hard all day for their money and paying taxes and choking from all sides – they are too “rich” for government assistance and can’t make ends meet with their salaries yet they are taxed through the roof for barely and tax that they benefit from.

  9. to comment 3 3 & 6 – you are not surpose to use a parking lot
anywheres as a cut thru-good drivers would go arround –
you can get a ticket for that same as using a gas station cutting
thru- better go back to driving school
