Emergency crews are responding to a water incident involving an overturned sailboat off the coast of Toms River this morning, officials tell TLS.
The call came in at approximately 10:45 a.m. reporting a sailboat overturned near Flag Point Road. The vessel had reportedly been in distress for about 10 minutes.
Officials say the mast of the boat was missing, and a person was seen hanging off the back of the boat. It was initially unclear whether the individual was wearing a life jacket.
The New Jersey State Police Marine Unit and a chopper are assisting in the rescue.
UPDATE: The boater has been rescued, and is being evaluated by emergency personnel.

Let this be a lesson for all of us to wear a life jacket when we go boating.
I can guarantee that this person did not leave the pier this morning planning to capsize. Just because you think “nothing is going to happen”, doesn’t mean nothing will.
It’s what we call a low probability-high impact scenario.
