Governor Murphy Signs Legislation to Inform Parents of Minors Using Illicit Substances

Governor Murphy today signed a bill that modifies the law regarding marijuana use in the Garden State.

The new law requires law enforcement to provide written notification to parent or guardian of person under age 18 who commits a first offense of unlawfully possessing or consuming alcoholic beverage, cannabis, marijuana, or hashish.

The legislation comes after an outcry from parents, educators, and police departments across New Jersey over a package of bills legalizing marijuana in the state, which included a provision that barred police and other law enforcement from contacting the patents or guardians of a minor in the possession of certain substances which could lead to an addiction.
