Going Away For Yom Tov? Place Your Mail On Hold At No Cost

usps truckIf you are leaving for Yom Tov, you may want to have your mail placed on hold while you’re away. The USPS offers this service free from 3-30 days. It takes just a couple of minutes to sign up , which you can do by clicking here. You can sign up until 2:00 a.m the day you wish to start. Burglars look out for homes with accumulating mail. Note, when a hold is placed on your mail, it gets placed on the whole address, so if you are a landlord or a tenant, be sure you both want your mail held.

  1. I’ve done this the last few times I went away and my mail was held and delivered when I came back except once. Over Rosh Hashona I was away and my mail was not held, so I called the P.O. to complain. They notified my very nice mail carrier who said she never got the hold order. She told me to put a card with the hold order into my mail box before I go away. It’s more reliable she said. You can request hold mail cards from your P.O. or your mail carrier. She then gave me a few cards to use the next time I need them. She told me that in Lakewood there are 2 post offices, and the hold mail notice goes to the one in the industrial park and the mail carriers don’t always get notified about the hold mail orders because they work out of the Clifton Ave. P.O.
