A girl traveling home from a Lakewood wedding last night is miraculously living today to tell the story of her near-death experience.
Shortly after 11 PM last night, the 20 year old Brooklyn girl was traveling on the Garden State Parkway with her brother and sister-in-law, when a deer jumped out in front of their minivan, a family member relates to TLS.
It an attempt to avoid the deer, the driver swerved, but lost control of the vehicle. With the wet roads contributing, the vehicle spun around, crashed into a tree, and then another, before ejecting the girl sitting in the rear passenger seat. The girl landed in the bushes on the side of the Parkway, the family told TLS.
Jersey Shore Hatzolah – and a passing Lakewood Hatzolah Paramedic – responded to the scene, and the girl was transported with Paramedics to Jersey Shore Medical Center.
About 45 minutes after her arrival, the girl was released from the hospital, the family member said.
The vehicle was totaled, and nobody else inside the vehicle was injured. [TLS]
Good news!
chasdei H-shem! These deer are sooo dangerous. my sis-in-law also had a really bad accident with deer, swerved across four lanes on GSP! car totalled, bh no one hurt. is there anything to do to ‘avoid’ deer??
Was this by exit 114
I heard there’s an option to place some type of horn or object on hood of car for deer if anybody can help the tzibur out by knowing any info about what do about deer’s to pls let the oilam know
oh wow! total miracle..! know the girl personally!!
Those things don’t work other than to separate one from one’s money.
There is something I think called a “deer whistle” or “deer warning”. It consists of two small (usually) plastic pieces. It supposedly emits a frequency which scare off deer. You attach it one to the front of your car on both sides (bumper or hood would work). They’re pretty cheap at around $5 for the pair. It is highly debatable as to whether it actually works or not, but if it’s worth anything a lot of people who use it say that they have now stopped seeing any deer.
Just go to Amazon and search “dear whistle”.
p.s. – It took me a few tries to post this. How am I supposed to know what 8 x 7 is? 🙂
it doesn’t surprise me that you don’t know what 8×7 is… you don’t seem to know how to spell either (it’s “deer” whistle, not “dear” whistle – unless you’re writing the whistle a letter…)
was she wearing a seatbelt
Way to go js40-49-50 you guys are amazing great job
bh shes ok hatzalah of jersey shore and lakewood are amazing
TO #10 – And don’t forget the man of the hour 70 he is the real hero.
JS 70 did a great job as well
its very simple people! if a deer runs across in front of you, hit the brakes and do not swerve or change lanes. if you hit the deer head on you will wreck the vehicle but you will also maintain control of it. you wont go spinning out of control across lanes and possibly into oncoming traffic. better a totalled car and a dead deer than a loss of your life or someone elses.
And don’t forget 13! 13 For Mayor!
Gee with all this talk about seatbelts, just goes to show who needs them?? She is very fortunate she sustained only minor injuries. Was speed a contributing factor besides the fog and wet road? Texting or talking on phone or both? Maybe the deer was on his cell and totally disregarded this driver? Hashem saved this person no one else.
Generally if you see a deer, you’re best off hitting it straight on as opposed to swerving out of the way. More often than not, swerving leads to much worse, be it crashing into other cars or losing control and flying off the road. The last 2 deer I encountered on the highway I hit straight on, and all I suffered was some minor damage to the front of my car.
Deers get caught in the headlights -so if one is standing on the highway – shut down main to parking lights. Do Not swerve to avoid it -they will run. Of course not talking about if one jumps out in front of you.
To # 8: Don’t judge. Maybe # 7 didn’t get an acceptance letter to any school and couldn’t receive a proper education.
Also, why all the need for the referencing to the responders?
As a thirty year resident of Lakewood, I do not remember so many incidents with deer, as has been reported this year.
Maybe, and I say maybe, the GSP should look into all the deforestation on the parkway. Specifically, did anyone do a study to see what effect the construction would have on the wildlife. AND WHAT HAS BEEN DONE to address the issue.
It seems like we should no longer call the GSP a parkway. IMHO The former GSP is no longer a parkway like the palisades, with greenery, but rather, Im sorry to say just plain ugly like any interstate highway.
Was any study done? Were the car deer issues addressed?
Why the reference to first responders ?? Because they are available 24/7 no matter what !! Perhaps you can show a little courtesy and say thank you instead.
There will be a lot of deer this year especially, due to the previous 2 years’ mild winters.
Chasdei Hashem
If your gonna hit a deer, speed up as much as possible and try to hit it head on. If its a really big deer yo will hit its legs and it will go airborne over the back of your car. Tried and tested!!!
