Frum residents say homeowners association in Lakewood neighborhood purposely holding meeting on Sukkos

lafayette-greenI recently moved into Lafayette Green, a neighborhood off Locust Street in Lakewood. Over the last few years, Jewish families slowly started moving into the neighborhood.

Of course there is a board for such a development, and once a year there is voting, as well as an annual meeting for the homeowners.

With voting season coming up here, we all got a letter stating the voting will be taking place October 17th, which we
know is the first day of Sukkos. Yes we can vote by sending it in before, but face the facts, that’s not going to happen. The meeting is that night as well, which we can not be there for.

A handful of people have called the association, and were all given the same answer – “In my calendar there are no holidays.”

To go ahead purposely and make voting on a day that we can’t attend – because you apparently don’t want us on your board – is outright disgraceful. We make up approximately 35-40% of the residents, and should have a voice.

This act should not go unnoticed.

Gmar Chasima Tova,
A frustrated Lakewood resident.

I know exactly how you feel. Last year our HOA annual meeting was on 3/17, St. Patrick’s Day. I also had to vote ahead, and missed the meeting.

Wow!

I agree 100% something like this should not go unnoticed and hopefully your development will switch the date for voting!

It is amazing that in this day in age that such blatant discrimination can fly. More amazing though is that that they can get away with it in Lakewood!!! Where are all the bleeding heart liberal attorneys??? Shame on the Association!!

I would deff let the association know that they will be the first one out when u guys finally get a seat on the board if they don’t switch the dates. Totally uncalled for behavior by the association and board! Stick up for ur rights.

What would have happened if the board was all Jewish and they decided to make voting on Christmas Day.

Mamish a Chutzpah! If we did this with even one gentile on one of their holidays you’d have every news agency posting about it.

If it’s so important to you to vote, send in your ballot earlier, what is the big deal. If you want to be a pioneer and move into one of these places that is not yet popular with frum oilam, this is what you have to deal with, not such a big deal.

I live there with the orthodox I am not orthodox. They are great people who actually care about the neighborhood. The current board is very nasty to all the old timers, it reminds me of the current dirty politics. It looks like the non unity has come to a real low in America when fellow neighbors cant accommodate each other.

As a NJ CAI member and Certified Manager for Associations I would suggest that you review your bylaws and make a special meeting of the board to review the issue at hand. Some bylaws allow the resident to call a special.meeting of the board.
A petition by those that will.miss the meeting will.definitely make a difference .
What is their quorum requirement for an annual meeting?
As for majority , you as a member have a right and if you feel the board is discrimination there is always an ADR alternatibe dispute resolution committee .
Find out if your association is a member of CAI national and if the Management Co is also. If so they are required to have an ADR committee got grievenses.

If that doesn’t help you will need the help of an experienced attorney in the field of HOA .

Being on an association board for many years I am shocked and horrified at the way the board members are treating the home owners. I recommend you get a lawer to see what he can do

This is not ok.
#23 has some great ideas. If those are not practical right now, perhaps someone from that development can take the time to hand out and collect filled out ballots and hand them in in advance. Then after Succos start proceedings to set things right for the future. These things take time and effort, but the only way to influence change is for someone to actively get involved.

WOW I’m really taken aback that there are people that still behave like there’s to fellow Americans. An ADR should be requested immediately. I wish you guys the best of luck.

They’ve made accommodations–mail in the ballot! If its good enough for dead people’s votes in the presidential election, it sure is good enough for the living for a HOA vote!
