A Lakewood father of ten is hoping to become the next Ocean County Sheriff. Frank Garnick, who describes himself as “a simple, hard working family man – a 46 year old, happily married father of ten, who looks forward to retiring to a farm,” has registered to run for the County position.
On the Republican side, Garnick will be running against the well-known Toms River Police Chief, Michael Mastronardy, and George ‘Bob’ Armstrong on the Democratic ticket.
On his webpage, Garnick offered the following information abut himself: Public school educated in NJ, with some college and technical schooling (Electrician, Machinist and Computer programming). A former Shop Steward, Frank was a Journeyman Machinist, having worked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard (Secret Clearance) and various machine shops in PA and Missouri. Frank spent time as a County Park Ranger, several years in Landscaping and General Construction. Frank has been in Retail and Retail Security in Lakewood since 1999. He plays guitar and sings, Classic Rock and Blues the staples with Country, Classical and Heavy Metal rounding out a wide taste range. A student of history & of the Natural Law, he has seen what works and what things have failed. Not a fan of Federal Government intrusion into every aspect of our lives, Frank is a fervent lover and defender of Liberty. It’s this wide ranging life experience combined with a deep love and understanding of all types of people and of the Constitution that makes Frank an excellent choice for Sheriff.
Why is he running?
This is what Frank had to say:
“Hello. My name is Frank J Garnick. I am running for Sheriff of Ocean County. I am not a cop. I am not a politician. Why then am I running for Sheriff?
I noticed recently an interesting point when I was reading the mission statement of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department. It said that their mission was to protect the life and property of the good citizens. Something very important is missing.
The Declaration of Independence clearly states the purpose of government,
“We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…”
Let’s break this down. So many important points are contained in these sentences. You and I are equal as regards rights. You may have more money than me. You may be more handsome than me. Jefferson was not referring to such matters. Rights are things inherent in our humanity. Things unalienable by anyone. I have no right to take your property as you have no right to mine. I have the liberty to spin around with bricks in my hands all I want as long as I don’t invade your space. We have a government to insure that nobody interferes with the rights of others. That’s it.
I am a lover of this country, its people and it’s Constitution. I’ve sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution numerous times. I see out of control government all around me, usurping powers never delegated to it by we the people. The thing created has no power over it’s creator.
Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis once said that a person has a right to be left alone. Remember that rights are inherent in our humanity. They are not granted to us by a benevolent government. The Bill of Rights was not a granting of rights but a protection of them. The Founders enumerated these things merely as a reminder to the government, as if to say HANDS OFF! Do you see government interested in such things? I for one do not.
The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department in their mission statement misspells it out perfectly. Where is the protection of our Liberty? There are many things that you and I would sacrifice our lives for. We sacrifice our property for things important to us all the time. Many people are willing to give up their liberty. I am not. I am not willing to give up my Liberty nor will I participate in the taking of other’s.

But he has no Law Enforcement experience, how then can he become the head Law Enforcement officer of Ocean County??

I agree with your statement. I agree that government should stay out of people’s lives.
However, I don’t think I will vote for you. I don’t think our Sheriff should be a frum person.
Hopefully, more non-frum people who agree with your positions will run for public office.
Law enforcement degree? Training? Experience? Forensic science? Perceptual psychology? Self defense? Tactical training? Military experience? I can daven for myself, I need a sheriff that can shoot more than a pricing gun and make witty conversation. To serve and protect.
Also exposing you and the community to criticism, and my thoughts are mild.
I have to agree with Yid’s first sentence. Mr. Garnick, if he so aspires to run for public office, should try for township committee, freeholder, state senator where his beliefs in the type of government he’d like to see might make a difference.
However his experience as a store manager won’t cut it in law enforcement. Man or woman, frum or not someone is needed with the tine on the job and the savvy to help local cops clean up the streets and keep them that way.
And people who would vote for him only because he is frum are the same as people who vote along strict party lines and not for the best qualified, you are part of the problem this country now finds itself in.
I really identify with his objective but I join those above me in saying this a job for someone more experienced in law enforcement.
From what I heard about Michael Mastronardy he does fit the bill on all angles.I see no reason to run against him.
im sorry but this man will not get picked to be the sheriff of ocean county. he has no law enforcement experience what so ever.
But will he be able to answer calls on Friday night and Saturday. If you are going to run for an office you must be available for the job.

Just as you have your liberty to comment above, has he the liberty to run for public office. Its nice and all that everyone is sharing opinions, and disagreement may be cool, however, many seem to take a position that due to their objection he has no right to run.

Please examine his credentials and make an educated choice. However, it is most undemocratic to fault him on his religious affiliation.

One does not need Law Enforcement credentials to be sheriff, for the same reason the president of the U.S doesn’t need military experience to be commander in chief, its the advisers who matter not the figure head.
Additionally case in point Gov. Christie’s former Lieutenant Gov. Kim Guadagno was elected sheriff of Monmouth county she also has zero law enforcement credentials, which im not saying is a problem, just proving my point that its not needed
