One Lakewood high school girl is apparently a good student, and businesswoman.
When it comes to finals, girls scramble for notes to make sure they have all the papers they need for the exams.
But one girl who worked diligently all year and had all the notes needed wasn’t ready to give away her hard work for free, so she had an idea.
The girl uploaded all her notes to a USB stick, organized them by subject, then copied them in bulk to sell to fellow grade-mates, parents told TLS.
“Most girls don’t have all notes, so this just made sense,” a parent said.
And cents it made – lots of them.
It turns out it was a bigger hit than expected, and the $8-a-piece USBs netted her close to $1,000.
Good for her.
Let her classmates not take for granted an entire year of hard work.
Can the Editor explain why this is news worthy?
Chaim,
Do you consider every article you ever saw in a newspaper news-worthy?
Sorry you didn’t like it – our team did, so we chose to publish it.
I think it’s newsworthy, this girl is a smart and savvy upcoming businesswoman. Her parents should be proud of her. More kids should be so ambitious to start their own little businesses.
You quoted the parent as saying, “So this just made sense.” Then you added, “And cents it made – lots of them.”
I just wondering if it also possible to make tea sense with this USB, or does the USB only work for this particular sense?
I am asking this question because I rush to make tea sense every erev Shabbos, and this USB would be a tremendous benefit and time-saver for me, if it can make sense without the tea bags and without the whole dipping process.
Waiting anxiously for you response.
Thanks in advance.
Not understanding why anyone cares.
Illegal? Don’t think so, unethical? Maybe. Either way she is quite the business woman.
Why is it unethical? She worked hard a whole year to put together a saleable product. There is no reason that she shouldn’t be able to sell her notes for $8. If you ask me that is too cheap.
Wow, this is beyond interesting. I wonder why it wasn’t “BREAKING NEWS”?!
Don’t forget taxes and maaser
she wont owe tax, she is under the limit. Maaser yes
Its wonderful that she is so diligent. But imagine if here and there she has inaccuracies and misconstrued info that will now be perpetuated manifold…
Many girls in Lakewood do this..
My daughter does this for her grade and writes clearly that the girls take no responsibility for inaccurate information.
Not sure why they posted this…
All I know is that my daughter is getting bombarded with phone calls asking if this is about her 🙂
Why does everyone sound so jealous? Good for her. She worked hard all year while they fooled around. Now she gets to cash in. And IMO the price should have been at least double. Just the USB these days cost money.
The USB drives these days cost about 0.25.
I don’t know why one girl didn’t buy it and the rest copy it from her.
Copying it off someone elses USB would probably be genaiva.
Not unethical at all..she worked hard for this. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy it
Happy she made money, well deserved for working hard, but it’s a shame everyone else got off so easily, not learning how to work and taking shortcuts is a missed opportunity…
what school?
can you do TLS comment readers a favor and keep to one name so we know its you. about three months ago you discovered TLS and have been leaving the same style “1st grade rebbe” humor comments. how about you build up a name for yourself so we can label them as “so and so’s” comments. here are some suggestions to stick with,
1st grade rebbe

Why so many negative comments? Would you prefer the doom and gloom of another accident? With so many bad things going on in this world it’s nice to see a story like this. If it bothers you so much just move on to the next story.
if the notes were all photo copied, it would also cost money
Well said Zman !! I’m with you !! How about some positivity in rejoicing someone else’s success, especially a smart hard working high-school girl !! Comon give her a round of applause – job well done !!
So exciting! My son sold soda cans and slush outside my house and made some nice money too! Maybe this will be a good shidduch. He can work and she can learn and hopefully supplement her kollel check with her chidushei Torah notes for Magidei shiurims wives to use when their Talmidim come for shabbos meals and they can then flip them as gently used notes for a discount.
Comment from a senior citizen:
Sorry. That this is considered normal and laudable is just another sign of yeridas hadoros..For example….
Once upon a time people gave rides for free. “I’m going anyway” “Not selling my mitzvah” .Upon passenger’s insistance “okay. If it makes you feel better I’ll let you pay for the gas”
As far as notes–Typically it was “can I borrow your notes” or “let’s study together”. My point–Selfish greediness is now now routine and praiseworthy.
Wish I went to your school. In my school, you couldn’t even buy good notes. No one wanted to share their success for fear of forfeiting valedictorian.
Agree with Malky. This is a sign of todays generation. Can anyone stretch themselves today just for the sake of being a good friend?
Asinine commenter, your comments are awesome. Keep it up!
Money isn’t everything. Imagine the chessed & kiddush Hashem she would have done had she offered her notes for the price of the USB!
The money will be gone in a flash, the Mitzva lasts forever.
I will never forget the bachur in 9th grade that gave me all the time in the world to answer my questions on the gemarah before my first farher
from the Rosh Hayeshiva. I got an Alef on the farher & this was a turning point in my life that led me to remain in Yeshivah & Kollel for many years, after failing in elementary school. There’s no dollar amount that bachur can be repaid for what he did.
This girl did nothing wrong, but the many girls who generously share their time & notes are the real unsung heroes to me.
I went to school in the 80s and the only people who made money on notes was the copy store across the street. Everyone shared notes freely. My whole class got 95s on our bio lab notebooks, the original notebook that got passed around got a 98 (well deserved).
This post just inspired me to give a little tzedaka in the zechus of thegirls who did chessed with their notes while the rest of us partied.
To Malky. Do you have anything against this student for wanting to earn some honest parnassah for herself? Have a wonderful Shabbat.
