Frum Firearms Instructor A Top Shooter In Shooting Competitions

VIDEO: A local Frum firearms instructor came in 1st and 2nd place in a recent shooting competition –  not uncommon for the instructor – but not something you would expect from your tyical Frum father.

Kosher Firearms instructor Daniel Kastelanski, featured on TLS several months ago, is amongst the top shooters in a Jackson Steel Shoot shooting competition, which involves approximately 100 contestants with various types of shooting experience.

At the Steel Shoot compeitions – which consist of several different ‘stages’, and contains static or ‘knock down’ targets of all  shapes and sizes – time is added for each run on the stage, then all the stage times are added together. Misses result in large amount of time added. The contestant with lowest time after the match, wins.

Ammunition is not limited to commercial, so most shooters use very low recoil self made rounds that give one faster recovery and hence more speed. Holsters are not limited either, so a lot of contestants typically use competition holsters that barely hold the gun in place, but allow for very quick draw.

Despite using commercial ammo and a standard holster – to emulate real-life scenarios – Daniel is still from the winners, although it doesn’t mean much to him.

“I attend these matches for practice, I don’t care that much about winning”, Daniel Kastelanski tells TLS. “That’s why I sometimes even shoot from concealment, from under a shirt or jacket – the same way I carry – which often surprises other shooters in the match”.

Kastelanski frequents these competitions, and will often bring along a friend, or students.

“A few shoots ago, I took one of my students, a Rabbi from Lakewood, with me and he had a blast and improved greatly”. “This time, I took my Chavrusa, who is a very nice guy, and the difference between his first and last stage was tremendous”, Daniel says.

Kastelanski says he enjoyed the shoot with Cops, Department of corrections officers, security officers, former army personnel, TSA and regular civilians, but seeing an Orthodox Jew in full gear – beard, Peyos, Yarmulke, suit and tie with his Tzitsis out – shoot through the stages, does a great service to the community and its relationship with the gentile population amongst us.

Kastelanski, an EMT, has been a gun owner for about 15 years, and has already trained dozens of homeowners in basic safety and self defense with guns. (See earlier story on Daniel here).

Daniel currently gives classes and one-on-one lessons in Lakewood and Philadelphia areas, and can be reached at 732-806-0466, or by email: [email protected]. TLS.

  1. While it is permitted to protect ourselves in a life threatening situation, Hakol Kol Yaakov Vahayodayim Yedai Aisav, this is not something to promote or be proud of.

  2. How is hakol kol yackov going to prepare you when a thief holds you up in your home. Perhaps you want to combine kol yaccov with yedei eisav to blast your gun at him, that’s a mehalech

  3. Reb Yosef,
With all of the other yetzer horos that are effecting us today. I think this is a terrific kosher outlet and something to be very proud of. I also feel that your kind of thinking which is very common among us, is a very big part of the otd kids problem .For the sake of all of us please consider bringing this issue to your rov for guidance.

  4. This is not a Torah forum. This is a commercial private news forum. It does serve the entire community.

While ideally a Jew’s whole life should revolve around the Torah and what it instructs in all areas, this is unfortunately not always the case.

I suppose, the best place to find the Torah Hashkafa for this or any area of life, is with your Rabbi.

This site does not promote only Jewish ideology.

  5. Well said, greatful.
Our mantra is, “DON’T DO THIS, DON’T DO THAT, ASSUR, ASSUR, ASSUR!!!” Enough with what we cannot do; what can we do? It drives people to seek out entertainment of the truly illicit kind! In conclusion: LOCK N’ LOAD!

  6. gun safety is essential if you are thinking of owning a weapon , I see nothing wrong with this article as it promotes that very issue. I say two thumbs up for whom ever posted this

  7. I do give lessons to women. I prefer to have a couple over just so everyone is on board, in case you decide to buy a firearm later on in life. In addition, women usually feel more comfortable around their husbands. I have just finished a class with two couples a few weeks ago.

  8. To trippy: Handgun prices range widely. Count on $500-600 new, for something reliable and effective for self defense. You will probably have it for the rest of your life, so there is no point in going cheap. Whatever you end up purchasing make sure you have someone experienced by your side and practice, practice, practice. It is just a useless peace of metal/polymer without a human that is proficient with it.

  11. IMPRESSED: This guy’s journey, this guy’s attitude, this guy’s shooting and this guy’s menshlechkeit!
DEPRESSED: At the constant responses from the idiots who ALWAYS have to come up with the same (moderated) time and time again ‘its osur, its bitul zman’
IT IS NOT OSSUR!! IT IS NOT BITUL ZMAN!! HAVING KOSHER FUN IS NOT FORBIDDEN!! Stop religiously strangling your kids, your friends and now TLS!
