FRIGHTENING DASHCAM VIDEO: Motorist in Lakewood strikes children in crosswalk and drives off

[VIDEO BELOW] Reader-submitted: “As I was driving tonight, I witnessed this near-horrific incident.

Baruch Hashem the two children walked away safely. I don’t want to think what could have c’v happened.

I know this was the driver’s fault (it’s petrifying how the man didn’t even stop to see if the kids he just hit were ok). Parents need to make sure their kids are wearing reflectors when they are out past dark.”

  1. just curious if the driver with the dashcam pulled over to make sure the kids were alright? and he should have gone after that car and taken down his license number!!

  2. What is the location of this incident? Did the driver of the vehicle have a green arrow to turn left? Why did the two people run away so fast? Need to know more facts

  3. The driver may have been fully concentrating on his driving, it”s dark and headlights point ahead of the vehicle not to the side (Some newer cars have turning headlights), also the front pillar could have obstructed the drivers view. BTW its an Impala (2000-2005), the sonata (NF) does not come with black trim around the vehicle

  4. I do not see that this is the dricvers fault. he is making aleft turn nd how in the world should he have seent hese kids. it was dark and no reflectors. very nice that they had the right of way but they should have been more careful too!

  5. A hit and run can be criminally charged for leaving the scene. Whether the girls were wearing reflectors or not at this point is mute since the driver obviously saw the two children since he honked at them. Yes we all should wear reflectors when walking at night but that does not change the seriousness of this offense.

  6. The driver would not have been charged with a hit and run since the kids were not hit. The most he could be charged with is failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

  7. I watched this video a few times and I don’t see where anyone actually got hit by the vehicle. I’m not saying the driving was not careless but is it technically considered a hit and run?

  8. They were not so hard to be seen I was there and saw them right away never blame anyone else unless you saw what happened. I was there and they were clearly doing the right thing maybe they should be wearing a reflector but that’s, not the point the. the driver didn’t even stop and ask if they were okay he just took off like an animal. the girl was seen 30 sec. later walking fine so I hope she is okay. whoever the driver is should figure out who she is and say he’s sorry and maybe he should also learn common decency.
a lot of people who drive in this town should not be driving at all. the other day I was driving and I noticed just about all the ladies were on the phone and driving that is crazy if c”v something happens and the police figure out that the driver was on the phone they could be charged with attempted manslaughter. I’m done have a great day.

  9. Did you see the girl go back into the middle of the street to pick up something that fell? That is asking for an accident big time. These children obviously have not been taught basic pedestrian safety, as rule #1 is to never go into the middle of the street to pick up something without an adult nearby. Please teach your children the importance of being a “defensive” pedestrian!

  10. PEOPLE MUST WEAR REFLECTORS!!!! u can’t blame the driver for not seeing them. In the video u onlu see them onice the driver almost hit them. The driver should have stopped to see they were ok. Children to must be taught cars are dangerous. It’s not a joke and it’s not funny to run in front of cars. I was driving the other night and some boys thought it was funny and ran across the street (@ 7 at night when it was dark) right in front of me and I had to short stop. They walked away laughing. I don’t think it wud be been funny if something would’ve Happened….. I wudve been traumatized myou whole life for running in to someone. This has got to stop WE NEED REFLECTORS THEY SAVE LIVES!!!!

  11. in response to I was there says:
when you are making a left turn it is much harder to see especially in the dark with no reflectors. maybe you were at a different angle and was able to see the kids better. I’m sure the driver was just as shaken up.

  12. Watching the video – no one Did anything wrong other than The fact they were not wearing reflectors. The driver did NOT hit them and obviously did not see them until the last second. There was no reason for him/her to stop as nothing happened. The kids were crossing the street correctly, other then the fact that they couldn’t be seen. That’s why they call then accidents….
People – including adults – need to realize that drivers CAN’T SEE YOU AT NIGHT. People walking can sometimes look liked a shadow to the driver of a car. I have stopped numerous people walking in the street that I couldn’t see to tell them to get reflectors as I had not seen them. GET REFLECTORS IF WALKING AT NIGHT!!! It’s so simple and could save your life!!!!
