Four Corners To Feed And Fuel Bike4Chai Riders

four_corner_tlsFour Corners, Lakewood’s premier Café and Bagel Shop, will take to the streets of Northern NJ Wednesday, August 3rd to feed and fuel 100 hungry cyclists during Bike4Chai’s lunch pit stop on Day #1. Bike4Chai is a unique 2-day ride that extends 150 miles from the Jersey Shore at Asbury Park to Camp Simcha in Glen Spey, NY, and benefits children battling cancer, granting them extraordinary camp experiences.

Four Corners has signed on as a corporate sponsor for the event as a way to give back to the community in general and Chai Lifeline in specific. It is a massive undertaking that they do not take lightly. Consider for a moment the following numbers:  During Day #1, 100 riders will traverse 112 miles over 8-9 hours and scale 6,000 feet. Each cyclist will typically pedal 172,800 times to propel his bike forward while burning an average of 650 calories per hour. To accomplish this feat, he must consume enough food and drink to replenish a minimum of 250 calories per hour. Towards this end, 8 refueling stations along the route will be fully stocked with 118 gallons of water, 258 gallons of Gatorade, 40 cases of 5 different types of energy bars and gels and ample bottles of sunscreen.

Four Corners recognizes that food quality is just as essential as food quantity for the long distance bike ride and are working closely with coordinators to carefully craft a menu that will provide the necessary vitamins and nutrients. Complex carbohydrates provide a steady energy supply to the muscles and will be offered in the form of whole wheat bagels and wraps. Colorful fresh fruits and vegetables are also essential, so bananas, watermelon, peaches and nectarines will be served in abundance.

With vigilant planning, the dedicated efforts of Four Corners will help ward off the dreaded “BONK”.  A bonk can occur when energy reserves are not maintained and are eventually depleted, causing performance and mood to deteriorate. A simple analogy would be a car that is forced to pull over because it is too low on gas. To keep topped off and functioning at full capacity, each rider will be adhering to a strict nutrition plan that was developed over his past weeks of training and is based on his personal weight, speeds and digestive system. Four Corners is determined to meet each rider’s needs and provide him with the resources and confidence to pedal strongly and enjoy the distance with energy to spare.

“Bike4Chai is tremendously grateful for the generosity of Four Corners”, says a Bike4Chai spokesman. “An enjoyable meal significantly contributes to an event’s overall ambiance and a positive state of mind is just as important as good nutrition for recreational rides”.

  5. Its high time the oilam recognizes the unreal tzidkuss of the Newhouse Bros, owners of 4 Corners. I’ve dealt w/ them several times in business as well as tzedakah matters. They are mamesh on another level higher in terms of generosity, noseh B’ol, sensitivity, understanding, ehrlichkeit & mentchlichkeit. What they’re doing for Bike-4-Chai is amazing. What can I say ? I’m happy to be their friend. And Customer. Btw, their food is awesome. I’ve gained 15# since they opened !! Hatzlachah Rabbah !! Dudi Birnbaum.

  6. Poster # 3 is right. Dovid never dreamt his bike ride of ’09 would turn into a fund-raiser of this magnitude, raising nearly a $500,000.00. Just keep in mind, megalgilin Z’chuz al yidei Zakkai – somewhere, someplace Dovid, u got a lot of Z’chusim. And so does Shaya Luzer Brachfeld – who, amazingly is also gonna do the ride. Have a gr8 ride, guys !!

  7. Rabbosai,

  8. The oilam should apreciate the Newhaus Bros of 4 corners for what they are: Tzaddikim. The tzedakah & chessed they do for the k’lal is outstanding. As is their food, btw. Keep up the great work ! Hatzlachah Rabbah. Dudi Birnbaum.

  9. If we sincerely believe that we lost the beis hamikdash due to sin’as chinam, then it makes perfect sense to do such a selfless thing – an act of pure ahavas chinam- during the nine days. Don’t be skeptical – show your support and earn a part of it, too!
