Flat Tires Increase But DPW Says They’re Working As Fast As They Can

flat tiresThere has been a sharp increase in flat tires in Lakewood over the last couple of months, tire repair shops, as well as Chaveirim, tell TLS, and they’re blaming it on poor road conditions. One local tire repair shop says their flat tire repairs jobs have more than doubled over the last two monts. Chaveirim tells TLS, they have also seen a significant increase in flat tire calls over the last few months.

To give you an idea of just how many motorists are getting flat tires, a Chaveirim dispatcher says Chaveirim gets a minimum of 15 calls for flat tires, daily.

Although some of the tires are fixed with a ‘plug’, many require a full replacement. Plugs, however, can only be inserted into the center of the tire, and not on the outer ‘smooth’ part of the tire.

“Tires are definitely taking a beating because of the potholes”, Ari of Retired Auto tells TLS.

So whose responsibility is it to fix the potholes?

That depends on who the road belongs to.

Last year, TLS submitted to Menashe Miller a DPW a reader-submitted list of dozens of Township road potholes in need for repair, which was given to the DPW. Those potholes were since corrected.

However, with the Winter season comes more road problems and even potholes properly filled with Hot-Patches, can come out during the harsh Winter, DPW says.

DPW Superintendent Tony Arrechi tells TLS they have a crew out every day filling potholes.

As a temporary solution in the cold weather, Arrechi says, the holes are filled with Cold Patches, which are then replaced with Hot Patches intended for longer use.

Should you see – or feel – a pothole, feel free to submit the location of the pothole in the comments section, which we will forward to the appropriate parties. TLS.

  4. to:#2 – service calls for non working street lights can be reported to the LPD Traffic safety division. Include the pole # if available and the nearest crossstreets. Requests for a new street light can be made in writing to Township Committee via the Township Manager. The DPW is only certified to repair the historic Street lights on Clifton Avenue from Main Street to Fifth Street. The replacement light for Second street, the one damaged Christmas day, has just arrived and will be installed next week.
