First Street, between Lexington Avenue and Monmouth Avenue will once again become a two-way street. The street was changed to a one-way East-bound last year along with several other downtown changes in an effort to ease the downtown congestion, but the change on this particular street proved to be inconveniencing drivers.
With 1st Street and 2nd Street both one-way East-bound, motorists who wish to access the downtown area from Monmouth Avenue, currently must turn onto 3rd Street to head West. As part of the reconfiguration last year, Lexington Avenue also became a one-way South-bound, forcing NJ Transit buses to exit from Ocean Avenue.

What about clifton to lexington? That’s the crux of the problem. We will still have to go all the way down to Main in order to get to second street.
So congestion will be back to help convenience driver. Who still will have to go to 3rd street to get to go east to Clifton ave.

wow I’m glad somone is thinking this is a no brainer !!! it never made any sense how in the world was it supposd to help the downtown traffic!
This is just further proof that this town continues to head in the wrong direction!!

when was 1st St a two-way street before? I’ve been here over 50 years and it was 1- way west bound all that time until they changed it last year. Will 2 way help? Guess it’s worth a try. You have to go out of your way to get to Clifton now from Monmouth, and it’s not easy making the left (south) on to Clifton from 3rd now. And traffic backs up from 88 1st St. on Monmouth and Lexington. Where will the stop on Lexington and 1st be?
maybe its time to change the mail box on corner first and clifton to the other side
I love it the way it is but if you make it two way make sure it’s with a four-way stop sign at the corner of Lexington and First.
1 st street was always a one way street from Monmouth Ave all the way to Clifton Ave it should be left alone with the over flow of Traffic in Lakewood which way will you go
that is wonderful but this is old news. The trick everyone needs to learn is how to read the sign at the stop sign( and you dont know what that means either) that says right turn only between 7 am and 7pm. I sit behind many a joker waiting to turn left or go straight accross four lanes of traffic and turning lanes and dont acknowledge the right turn only sign.
Smart move- about time.
First the buses exit on first and have to go east so that the buses are not clogging up traffic on Clifton ave. Second sorry that you have to go “all the way to Main st.” because it is so far for you to go, three words get over it. Plan your route better leave earlier, the one way on first between lex and Clifton keeps the buses off of Clifton.
