UPDATE: Statement from the NJSP on the fatal boat accident.
UPDATE 11:30 PM: Sources tell TLS four teens were involved in the accident, reportedly crashing their boat while drunk. One was killed, two are critical, and one was moderately injured.
An investigation is underway.
UPDATE: At least two medevacs have been requested. CPR is being performed on at least one patient. Brick emergency personnel have been called for mutual aid.

Emergency crews are responding to a serious boating incident in Toms River after a boat reportedly struck an object in the water, leaving multiple people with critical injuries, TLS has learned.
Initial reports obtained by TLS indicate a man was unconscious and suffering from severe head injuries after the boat arrived at shore.
Authorities subsequently requested additional ambulances after learning that multiple people had been injured in the crash. A second victim was also reported to have life-threatening injuries.
Numerous EMS, fire, and police units have responded to the scene as first responders continue rescue and lifesaving efforts.
This is a developing story. TLS will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Sad, for weeks it was e-bike crashes, now boats. Hope those alive recover well.
BTW, there typically isn’t insurance when you rent a motorboat, as it would be so high, it’s not worth it for them to get it.
Boaters have to be extra careful, especially as it’s something you’re not used to. You have to leave much more space between you and other boats than you think you need. And watch out for buoys etc, as was mentioned in another article about crash (crashed into buoy).
I wrote this before the part that they were drunk was added. Still a good point for everyone.

Yes — it is illegal to operate a motorboat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in every U.S. state. This offense is called Boating Under the Influence (BUI), and it is treated with the same seriousness as a DUI on land. http://www.dui.org
So very sad. Yes it is illegal to steer a boat while drunk. Unfortunately alot of young people think they are invincible and rules don’t apply to them.
You’d think that maybe because boating doesn’t require a license, it doesn’t have DUI laws, but at that link (dui.org…) they write that there are such laws in most states. It’s called Boating Under Influence or BUI, and has the same laws for alcohol level as DUI. As a matter of fact, in some states the laws for boating are even stricter (BAC level) than DUI, because there are additional factors that can cause “boater’s hypnosis” – including the wind, sun and sea air.
It is important to have one or two designated drivers/captains, if others are drinking. (And they have to make sure that the others are not impairing their ability to steer properly.)
Just a matter of time of time. No one really hears when you talk about drinking & Driving or Riding on the water same thing and same consequence, You Lose your Drivers License even on water, 5 years of DWI school you pay for of course. And Jail time if someone dies & someone did. So the person driving will be going away for a long time. Driving & STUPID

Original stories can have some hearsay, as they noted. So, the official report so far (Sun afternoon) does not say anything about being drunk. But the lesson in comments here are still good.
There was a story reported here just last week where someone hit a buoy, and another person commented that it can be hard to see them. So, this seems to be another such story.
