FDA Approves Second Vaccine, Murphy Urges Skeptics To ‘Trust The Science’

Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine was given final approval by the FDA on Friday evening, adding millions of doses of vaccines to fight the coronavirus pandemic into the US supply chain. The vaccine developed by Moderna, like Pfizer’s, uses a new technology based on genetic material called mRNA, a revolutionary approach that has received widespread praise in the biomedical field but also skepticism among the general public.

As previously reported on TLS, about 400 doses of Moderna’s vaccine are expected to be received in Lakewood next week, and will be administered to Frontline workers by CHEMED.
Governor Murphy has also recently been urging New Jerseyans to get vaccinated, despite the skepticism and sometimes outright conspiracy theories of some. Health officials in New Jersey say that there are generally three types of people when it comes to the Covid-19 vaccine – the willing, the skeptical, and those that will simply refuse to get it. Officials are now engaged in an all-out effort to convince the skeptical that the vaccine is safe and will not harm them. “Put your faith in science,” Governor Murphy says.

The governor also said that the NJ Department of Health will be using six “mega sites” as hubs for administering Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, as well as others that may soon receive FDA approval. As of now, there will not be such a mega site in Ocean County. The sites will first serve Frontline workers with a goal of vaccinating up to 2,400 people per day per site, and will eventually phase in the general public as more vaccines enter the supply chain.

“Building out a core infrastructure of vaccination sites is a critical component of our strategic and efficient deployment of a COVID-19 vaccine and is a key element of New Jersey’s recovery,” Murphy said. “These statewide sites will be in position to vaccinate front line health care workers who are part of the 1a category and will continue for each successive group of New Jerseyans that becomes eligible for vaccination.”
