Expect NJ Transit Fare Hike As Early As May

fare hikeNJ Transit’s new executive director says fares will increase this year, possibly as soon as May. James Weinstein addressed his first board meeting today. Weinstein said fare increases are needed as the agency faces a projected deficit of close to $300 million for the 2011 fiscal year. He said the increases would be implemented by the end of June and possibly sooner. He didn’t say how much fares would rise. NJ Transit fares last went up about 9 percent in 2007. Last week Gov. Chris Christie said he would withhold about $33 million from NJ Transit’s current fiscal year’s budget as part of his effort to freeze $1.6 billion in unspent money. Christie said he was taking the step to help close the state’s $2.2 billion budget hole. Star Ledger.

  1. What a chutzpah!! Those guys should first be revisiting their “rich union contracts” and obscene pensions/benefits before choking the common citizen who can’t afford their own vehicle…

  2. people on the website are so clueless, the reason this nation was so prosperous in the past is because of the protections of unions to the American worker, in the past several decades corporations and the government have done everything possible to destroy unions making the rich richer, the poor poorer and the middle class constantly falling into the lower class because the only jobs left that can’t be moved overseas are service jobs that don’t pay enough for people to comfortably support a family, so rather then support the destruction of another union with your stupid comments why not throw them your support, all occupations should have unions because management and owners don’t care about employees and will do anything to line their pockets at the expense of the people who work for them, in my lifetime this country will most likely become a 3rd world country not because of the illegals as most people point the finger at but because of a few rich white men who have more money then they will ever need and still want more, even if that means the destruction of this of this nation and the welfare of it’s people
