What about Lakewood district? Why aren’t they profiting of private schools students in same way?
Question is how we get this out there
Wow! Avi Schnall that was an incredibly eye opening video. As a Toms River resident that sends to private school, that was a very important clarification of the funds.
Is there any way for the Agudah to step in and allocate those funds to private schools? Any way to get the Township to lower taxes?
Thank you for posting this video.
You also having senior citizens and couples with no children paying school taxes. In society we aren’t always looking to get money something like school taxes are understood that it’s a tax for the better good. That money is being used to educate children who will grow and pay taxes one day to educated the next generation. It isn’t a scam or something to refuse to pay.
Toby- we kno what u said is true. It is like that in all societies. I think the point is : #1. Townships outside of Lakewood are wary of private school children causing the township more money, while here we see the opposite to be true. #2. In Lakewood, being that there is an extremely large amount of households sending to private schools and yes, all those households are paying high taxes,( my neighbors and I can assure u!) A tremendous amount of tax dollars from the majority of homes here are funding a small amount of public school stude, proportionally. Yes that’s how society works, we know. Just don’t dare say we arent doing our part bc we sure are! Ur welcome
Thank you Rabbi Schnall for taking the time out to dig into this all. Thank you for all you hard work and all your continued efforts for the klal!
Thanks for schooling us Toby. We werent aware that’s life’s not only abt getting money. If ur so closed minded and decided that’s how we all are, then of course you will quip abt this. Haters gona hate, let em kno back at rise up ocean county, that u schooled us and now we aren’t money hungry. Light will overcome darkenss, Toby. Open ur eyes heart and mind to ur neighbor 95% of us are kind, decent, caring ppl. And we are sick of the constant hatred, no one deserves that.
lkwd mom – Your comment is extremely uncalled for. Nothing Toby wrote calls for your snarky sarcastic remarks. “95% of us are kind, decent, caring ppl..” Well you’ve just shown that you are in the remaining 5%
@Toby I never meant that we should not pay taxes. I just think that it unfair for us that send to private schools to have to pay so much taxes towards the public schools; especially since they are making a large profit from us sending to private schools.
Anyone that claims that a school district is “profiting” from taxes paid shouldn’t be taken seriously.
I am so happy that you explained this. As usual the media is Fake News!! Keep up the good work!!!
Excellent video! Just wondering if all the students would be enrolled in the public school system would Toms River be receiving more state aid? Another thing to keep in mind is that all the Jewish private school students come to Lakewood which means Toms River does not have a single property that is nonprofit thereby going property tax wise – Lakewood should start charging Toms River for supplying the nonprofit tax free properties…
Out of Toms River School District overall budget, 75% comes from local taxes, 25% comes from the state. Additionally, the minimum property taxes in areas where Orthodox Jews are moving is $8k per year, with the average being closer to $10k per year. This means that even if the state does reduce their aid, considering that the vast majority of funding is from local taxes, and that the property taxes paid are actually much higher than Rabbi Schnall mentioned, the overall benefit to the Toms River School District is actually much higher, even if a reduction in state aid actually does occur.

Amazing Avi!
One notation: Actual profit number is $1.1 million. The average isn’t 5 kids per family in schools , it’s between 2-3. The number of orthodox families in Toms River isn’t 200, it’s around 500.
That said, the Media Outlets were spot on with their $1.1 million dollar number, they just mixed up the donor with the receiver! Pretty bad, no?!
By the way, the numbers will only get better for them.
Hey Toms River, you should be thanking us for coming!
Content of video is very good. Should be presented more professionally with wider circulation. For an uninformed or undecided outside individual, the current presentation style lacks the attention grab or sophisticated look which very important nowadays. Would likely hold more appeal if was presented as a brief voice-over narrated crisply prepared presentation.
Excellent Video.
This message will never make it to the headlines though.
The press is always seeking ways to show how out community is a detriment, not a benefit.
They feed into the hatemongers and rile them up.
The secret is though everyone knows for the most part, that having the Jewish Community in your town is a benefit not a deficit.
I guess you can slice the numbers any way you wish. But an argument could be made that when an OJ family buys a house from a typical Toms River homeowner, they are typically replacing a household with no school age children. Therefore all the school taxes paid up to that point were pure “profit”, while now it is costing about $300 per child.
On the other hand it could be argued that OJ buyers drive up home prices thereby increasing overall ratables.
The bottom line is that no matter if the town is “losing” money or profiting off of the OJ residents, if we make an effort to being good citizens of the town and are an overall positive influence on the entire population of the town, people wouldnt count the beans so carefully to see if each child brings in “profit” or if the town “loses” a few dollars. Similar to how a family without children dont mind paying taxes to benefit their neighbor who does.
The average Orthodox Jew who is purchasing a home in Toms River, is purchasing a 4 to 5 bedroom home. Some of those may be retired without school aged children, many of them may be. However, there are very few retirees looking to purchase 4-5 bedroom homes with the high taxes and maintenance that come along with it. Many maybe selling their homes to downsize, but any buyers of these homes would be parents with school aged children. The fact that it is Orthodox Jews purchasing these homes, as opposed to people with children in the public schools, saves the school district money.
Something which also is not mentioned, is that property taxes in toms River tripled in 2009, this coincided with a crash in the real estate market. Toms River real estate had been very stagnant since then. The only places where the market has recovered is in areas where Orthodox Jews are purchasing. 11% of Toms River homes still owe more money on mortgages then their property is worth, without Orthodox Jews moving in and raising the values in North Dover, the number would be much higher
@lakewoodmom..wow you’ve definitely showed how loving you are. No where did I say anything to deserve your tirade of hate. I’ll pray for you you that you open your mind and lose the gate in your heart.
Why didn’t he disclose that categorical aid applies to all transportation, including special education busing, and is not broken out as he seems to think on just private school general education busing? The other assumption is that paying taxes covers the education expenses of a household. That MAY be the case if the taxed dwelling only has one general education public school student. All other families (including renters, subsidized housing, families with more than one child, special education students, etc.) are being subsidized by their childless neighbors and state income taxes. The only taxpaying residents in a community that put more into the public education system than the benefit they receive are childless dwellings. All others, even private school students, take more than they contribute because of funding of private school transportation, special education, nursing services, non-public textbooks, etc. Also, public schools do not “profit” from anything, they are a government agency!
