EXCLUSIVE: Senator Singer Will Not Seek Leadership Post Following Oroho Retirement

UPDATE: In a conversation with TLS this afternoon, New Jersey state Senator Bob Singer says he will not seek the party leadership role following the unexpected retirement announcement this morning from Senate Minority Leader Steve Oroho.

“Right now we are working on getting our Senators re-elected and there is no change,” Singer told TLS, adding that his focus is working toward regaining the majority.

But when asked if it is a position he would campaign for regardless as to whether Republicans are in the majority or minority, Singer answered with a flat “no.”

“No, the answer is no, ” he said.

New Jersey state Senator Bob Singer (R-Lakewood) is once again in contention for the party leader post following the news this morning that Senate Minority leader Steve Oroho, who represents the 24th legislative district, will not seek re-election.

Singer had sought the leadership spot in 2021 following then-Senator Tom Kean’s departure from the Senate so he can run for Congress but ultimately fell short to Oroho in that race.

However, Senator Singer, who is in his twenty-seventh year in the New Jersey State Legislature, was chosen to be Republican Conference Leader in the New Jersey Senate.

Other possible contenders for the leadership role are Senators Anthony Bucco (R-Boonton) and Michael Testa, Jr. (R-Vineland).

Democrats currently have a 24-16 majority in the state Senate but Republicans are hoping to cut into that lead in this year’s Legislative elections, when all 120 seats in the Assembly and Senate will be up for re-election.

If Republicans pick up a net gain of five seats, the the Republican leader will be Senate President.

The longtime member of the Lakewood Township Committee is also the senior ranking member of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee and is a member of the Senate Higher Education Committee.

Singer retired from the Lakewood Township Committee in 2010 after serving in that post for thirty years.
