“The moment I saw the poor woman in distress, I did the only thing I could do – that was to help her,” Mitch Pillot, the man being hailed a hero by police and others after tackling a robbery suspect tells TLS.
Pillot, a Howell resident who runs a limousine company, was identified as the man who tackled a suspect who had just robbed a woman from her purse in downtown on Wednesday.
Pillot tells TLS he was at a red light when he saw a man “acting weird as he got closer to her.”
He then saw him snatch the purse from her, and she began to scream.
“I could not believe he did that in broad daylight,” says Pillot. “My main thing at that point was not to let him get away.”
After witnessing the robbery, he followed the suspect for about eight blocks before he was able to pull over and make sure he could hold him until police arrived. That’s when he sprung into action.
“I reached from behind him and brought him down to the ground,” Pillot says. And it took the suspect by complete surprise.
“He honestly did not have a chance to fight,” Pillot says. “He did not see me following him, he was too busy running.”
Moments later, officers arrived and cuffed the suspect, taking him into custody.
“The police were so grateful and called me a hero,” Pillot says. “They said they wished they had more people like me. It felt really good.”
But Pillot says he was just someone trying to do the right thing.
“I honestly did my best to make sure that he didn’t get away, because today too many get away with terrorizing innocent victims,” he said.
And Pillot says he trusted his instincts, and would trust them again.
“It’s easy to turn a blind eye and just go on about your day, but all I can say is, if I had to do it again, I would.”
