EXCLUSIVE: Former Fire Commissioner Loigman Joins Race; Questions about Petition Arise

fire commissioners offc tlsFormer Fire Commissioner Larry Loigman has joined the race for one of the vacant seats on the Fire Commissioners Board, but some questions about the petition have arisen, sources tell TLS.

Loigman tells TLS he submitted ahead of the deadline two petitions – one for a two year term and one for the three year term – as he wasn’t sure which one he wanted to run for.

On Sunday, after the deadline, Loigman told them to accept his two-year petition. But issues have arisen from it, and an official told TLS a meeting is being held on Monday to discuss the validity of the petition.

Ray Blasczak from the Fire Commissioners Office told TLS on Thursday that Loigman’s name was included in the list of those who filed for the two year term, and “after review by our attorney and the commissioners, this is how it was sent to the County Clerk.”

Either way, “I intend to pursue it,” Loigman tells TLS.

The former Commissioner says he decided to run again because “over last few months, there been serious deterioration in the operations of the district.” He added, “I see for the first time in a number of years a tremendous amount of divisiveness, an it’s not helping the operation.”

Also running for the two year term, is Moshe Raitzik, Louie Follman and John L. Antonas. Meir Cohen, the incumbent, is running for the three year term.

Elections are next month.

  1. To # 3,

I would like to see Larry on the BOE as well. However, that position likely requires far more time and involvement to address the myriad significant issues that need to be properly dealt with..

And besides, as it currently stands, the BOE members are powerless, so why would anyone agree to seek such a position for just an exercise in futility??
