Ex-Mayor Cunliffe Seeks To Run As Independent For Lakewood Committee

The partisan races for seats on the Township Committee are uncontested for the primary election Tuesday, though candidates could encounter a third-party challenge from a recognizable face in November. Less than a year after he was pushed out for being what he called a political “lighting rod,” Charles Cunliffe is circulating petitions to run as an independent, saying the Republican and Democratic parties have been “co-oped” by developers and landlords, among others. “They control the political activity in town on both sides of the aisle,” he said Thursday. “We thought the only viable option would be to go with a third party.” The former four-term committeeman and two-time mayor said he has built a sizable constituency, comprised mostly of senior voters who feel disenfranchised under the current government. Larry Simons, Cunliffe’s campaign manager of sorts, said he hoped to recruit enough supporters to break from the “old-time politics” practiced by a Township Committee that he described as a “buddy system.” “People speak out, but they’re not being heard,” Simons said. He cited as an example the committee’s decision to cut the school budget by just 1.1 percent after voters defeated it. Read the full app article here.

  2. Chalie; your quality of life craze & you daughter with the cop uniform that just doesn't fit-but insisted that LPD doesn't dump her after crashing the police vehicles, etc. Let her go get a job more in line with her experience or rather qualifications.

So exact;y what would you change in Lakewood? would you be willing to have your daughter dismissed from active duty on LPD? as a first step.

  3. I don’t intend on voting for Mr. Cunliffe, but I protest such disparaging comments and personal attacks made on anyone, particularly a former repeatedly elected official who has never been openly hostile to anyone himself. That is on a moral level. On a practical haskafah level, I don’t understand how people in Golus can pick a fight with a potential candidate who yields much influence even if unelected. No I’m not voting for him(as of now)and those who have issue with him should feel free to say so and highlight why, but bear in mind although you may feel Lakewood is Yerusalyim (in the time of the of the first Bais H’Mikdash)people who live in the ‘Ihr H’Torah’ are also bound by the Torah says about Kovod Malchus,Mored B’umas and other dealings with nonjews.

As Rav Yosef Elyah Henkin once put it in relation to this issue.Leopards bite people unprovoked also, but by provoking one you are guaranteeing to put yourself in danger. This isn’t meant to refer to Mr. Cunliffe as a leopard but something to bear in mind if you perceive/know someone as being one.

I appreciate your sarcasm in referring to me.Apparently your lack of decency in dealing with some has carried over. Can you please explain to the feeble minded like myself how the Mitzvah of Michiyus Amalek refers to the person/topic you refer to in clear lucid terms that even I can understand. No Boich Svoras. Please base your feelings on Gemorah>Rishonim>Achronim.I will note that many Rishonim hold Mechiyas Amalek applies with a Melech etc. but assume that point won't be considered by those who think Lakewood is Yerushalayim.
