Emergency Responders Take Part In Drill Simulating Plane Crash

PHOTOS: Emergency agencies from Lakewood and surrounding Townships took part in a training drill Sunday morning, simulating a plane crash scenario.

The drill, arranged by Fire Chief Rodney Youmans and which took place in Industrial Park, simulated a scenario where a small plane crashed near businesses and people, as was experienced at the Lakewood Airport several months ago. The plane in the drill caught fire, which was extinguished by the Lakewood Fire Department and those which came to its aid.

“I think everyone came out with a lot from the drill”, said Fire Chief Rodney Youmans, and says the periodic drills keep the departments’ training and preparedness level in check.

Fire Commissioner Larry Loigman also attended the drill and says he was extremely impressed.

“As a fire commissioner, I was again impressed with the dedication and skill of our volunteers, who willingly gave up several hours on a Sunday morning to help improve their skills to keep Lakewood safe”, Loigman tells TLS. Loigman added, that the continuous training familiarizing the members with various high-hazard locations, keeps the fire insurance rates lower.

Loigman also said that the Fire Department needs to have more volunteers.

“If you have some time to devote to the safety of your community, please call the Board of Fire Commissioners, at 732-364-5151, for a membership application. Prospective members are provided with training and equipment, and can sign up for either fire police or firefighting duties.”

Taking part in the drill, were all of the Township’s volunteer fire companies, Lakewood First Aid, the Ocean County Fire Marshals office and agencies from Berkeley and Brick Townships. TLS.

  2. What would happen if a commercial jet was to crash in Lakewood? Are the firefighters trained for that? I sure hope so a lot of them fly over Lakewood.

  3. in lakewood , us firefighters are far more worried about streets that we can not drive down because cars are parked on both sides and buildings that are built to close together for us to safely stop fire from spreading form one unit to another ! we are also worried about continued budgit cuts ! a commercial jet crashing is not one of our top 10 concerns but i assure you we will be prepared to handle it if that ever happens!!!!

We are trained in all emergencies..If there was a crash in lakewood us Firefighters are prepared for the worst. We train every month 2-3 hrs per month as required. We go to countless classes on how to prepare for emergencies and how to handle them when they happen..You have some of the most experienced firefighters in Lakewood and surrounding towns that will respond at a moments notice. We don’t hope for the worst but if it comes we are going to be there until its done..You dont have to worry about that.
I don’t concern myself with the “what ifs” I concern myself with are my brothers & sister firefighters safe and will go home to their families..You worry about you ..let us worry about the Big Picture. When it comes You will see us all there with our tools, trucks & members doing what we do best, but I am sure we will see you all there criticizing what we are doing..and if there was a “commercial aircraft crash” In Lakewood..You and I both know that we will not be the only ones there but we will be the ones everyone is looking to for direction. Most of those “commercial aircrafts” that are flying over are mostly military aircrafts flying on training missions.
