E-ZPass Break For Non-NJ Customers Ends July 1

ez pass acceptedDrivers who have E-ZPass accounts in other states soon won’t get off-peak discounts when they pass through New Jersey. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority voted unanimously to end the discounts on Tuesday, spokesman Tom Feeney said. The change will go into effect on July 1 and will affect Class 1, or passenger, vehicles traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The authority estimated that E-ZPass users who set up their accounts in other states will now pay about 34 percent more during off-peak travel through New Jersey. New Jersey E-ZPass customers won’t be affected by the change. Full story in AP.

  1. I think you need a NY EZPass to get the discount on the Verrazano and the carpool rate on the other crossings. Can anyone confirm?

  2. NY gives a discount on the Verrazana and carpool on outerbridge and goethels. You save alot more with NY than with NJ unless you’re a frequent turnpike driver.

  3. Carpool discounts on Outerbridges, Goethels, Holland, Lincoln & GW are fom Port Authority which is jointly adminstered by NY & NJ. These carpool discounts are also available to NJ EZ Pass holders,

  4. I seem to recall that NJ EZ Pass also charges a monthly service charge for the privilege of their account. If so, there is another tidbit to consider. From my recollection, that service charge is about $1/month.

  5. There is an extra (substantial) discount for Staten Island residents, but I think the standard discount applies to PA of NY/NJ tags.

  6. I can confirm that with NJ EZ-PASS the Verazano is $13 and with NY EZ-PASS its $9.60, You can get the carpool discounts with either one.

  7. Just to clarify, there is no Verazanno carpool discount with either NY or NJ, except for SI residents with Carpool tickets and stickers on windows. There’s no carpool on borough to borough bridges and tunnels. There are carpool discounts at cash lanes upon request if pre-registered in program at NJ-NY bridges and tunnels.

  8. #10 is correct. And PS- most NY EZ passes have a $1 monthly fee too. So unless you really travel on the turnpike a lot, it is much better to have a NY ezpass, because you save $3.40 each time you go on the Verrazano. And you can get the Outerbridge and Goethals carpool discounts on both NY and NJ ez passes.

  9. I just switched from NJ to NY EZPASS and we are already saving money at the Verrazano. We rarely use the turnpike so this method makes much better financial sense for us.

  10. I’m in with #13. we just switched from NJ to NY and we now don’t pay a monthly fee and the verazanno is only $9.60 down from $13!
    #10 has it right.
