Driving On The Yellow Stripes To Get Into The Turning Lane

car_on_yellow_lines[Photo] Reader Submitted. To whom this may concern. I snapped the attached picture while sitting at a red light at Route 9 north, just before Central Avenue. While sitting behind several cars at the red light, I suddenly noticed this car on my left side cutting off the long line of cars by driving on the yellow stripes, apparently trying to get into the turning lane.

I wanted to bring this to the attention of other motorists, as this is something against the law and could be dangerous as other cars legally merge into the turning lane at the proper markings.

Thank you.

  1. While on this topic, does anybody know if it is legal to stand on the yellow stripes and make a left turn into Chemed (Jamesway) when traveling south on route 9?

  2. same question as #4 – when I am going on 9 North & want to turn left into the parking lot of Rabbi Blech’s shule – can I go on the yellow lines there ?

  3. I once got a ticket on rt 9 for doing this because one of the cars i passed while on the yellow lines was a state trooper i learned my lesson. Can someone explain why on south clifton before the light to main st within 50 feet 2 lanes become 1 and then back from 1 to 3 ? it needs a re’something

-you dont need to. everyone should remember what was CLEARLY written in the basic automobile driver manual. Everyone tested and affirmed that they know the rules of the road. WHY DO WE NEED “FRIENDLY REMINDERS”? these friendly reminders only continue to dumb down people.
(my saw doesnt need to come with a warning label to not place my hands near the spinning blade.)

  5. i know this intersection and i see cars doing that all the time. yea it’s wrong but some drivers drive like they “own” the road. someday they’re gona “own” a jail cell too if they keep up with these crazy habits. to each their own.

  6. They are called channelization lines and as one unfortunate driver found out it is a violation to drive on them. UNLESS you are in Lakewood as the LPD does not enforce it. I would advise against driving on the stripes in any other part of the state.

  7. thanks for posting this, as most people are not aware that this is ilegal. I cannot count how many times have entered that exact turning lane at the right spot only to nearly get slammed by a car who was driving on the yellow lines.

    On this topic

IT IS ILEGAL TO DRIVE ON THE SHOULDER FOR ANY REASON
If the car in front of you is making a left turn, you MUST wait.
The shoulder is reserved for disabled vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
You can get a ticket and FOUR points on your license. Check the manual

DO NOT drive on the shoulder for any reason!

  8. Thank you for letting us know that it is illegal. I heard they are hiring 6 new cops in the Lakewood, If you want you should become a cop and pull people over but until then mind your own business and dont snap pictures of other people driving(which is also illegal).

  9. There is a common practice to wait to turn left over the double yellow lines on Rt 9 and Pine St. Unbelievably, the police are fine with this! For this reason, a few years ago when trying to make the (incredibly difficult) left turn out of Bais Rivka Rochel Rd. into Pine St., I was hit by a bus who was (guess what) waiting to make the left turn so far back it was prior to BRR Rd. (and certainly way before the turning lane opens up closer to Rt. 9).

The intolerable lack of traffic lights by Martin Luther Rd. contributes to this issue, where long strings of cars are backed up way up Pine St. and it had become almost necessary to move to the left side if you were planning to turn left at Rt. 9.

The township NEEDS to address this thorny area of Lakewood, where mass development has snarled the roads up to the point of danger (remember, the accident happened due to disregard of road markings). I’m glad I moved away from that neighborhood if only because of the challenge of making left turns (at ALL streets in that area: Mark Dr., Martin Luther Rd., Forest Park, Pine River, Bais Rivka Rochel Rd.)

The stress of driving on Lakewood’s overwhelmed roads is out of control.

  10. The twp. shouldn’t give zoneing for more gevelopments down Rt. 9, if the roads can’t handel the amount of people. or widen Rt. 9.
when a development is build survays are taken to see many things omoung them are: if the roads can handel the traffic, and if more traffic lights are needed ect… and in order to get the zoneing the developer is obligate to PAY that bill, why is this being neglected in Lakewood,

  11. I once saw someone do exactly as the car in the picture, he (someone who I see around town) actually zipped by all the cars and my car only to literally almost hit a police motorcycle who had just made a left onto Rt 9 south and was riding for some reason on the yellow lines. The cop was mad at him, as you could see and then motioned to him to pull into the gas station(or whatever that place is supposed to be) and seems like he gave him a ticket. I guess before we take chances we really got to think if its worth it.

  12. number 24. The time it takes, not to mention the tax payers money, you can not waste time and money for something such as widening Rt 9. It is a problem of congestion, nothing more. Would you rather have a stalled, even more clustered problem which already exist?

  13. it apears from the comment that the reader does not care about safety it seems like there is just jealousy that there was a long line notice how the comment is written

“While sitting behind several cars at the red light, I suddenly noticed this car on my left side ****cutting off the long line of cars ***by driving on the yellow stripes, ”
only later justifying why it should be wrong ( illegal & dangerous)

  14. To 13, I wonder why LPD does’nt enforce this? They are to busy taking accident reports, stolen bicycle reports, and oh yea lets not forget the burglaries. Lock your doors, bikes, and stay off the yellow lines…….Be Safe !!!!!!!!
