The flu season is expected to be worse this year than last year, Lakewood Pediatrician Dr. Reuven Shanik tells TLS. The flue season usually peaks in January-February according to health officials, but Dr. Shanik’s office is already seeing a surge in Flu cases in Lakewood.
Flu-related hospitalizations are also on the rise.
Yesterday, Health Commissioner Mary O’Dowd announced the early start to the season, as reported on TLS, and said “the best way to protect yourself, your family and your co-workers is to get a flu shot.”
“If you are the parent or guardian of a child under the age of six months, please get a flu shot not only to protect yourself but also to protect your baby,” said Deputy Health Commissioner Dr. Arturo Brito. “If you live in a household with anyone in one of the high risk categories, you should also get vaccinated.”
For millions of people each year, the flu can bring a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, and fatigue. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized in the United States from flu complications each year. The flu also can be deadly. TLS.
so can the vaccine
Last year my husband took our child to the Dr. for a routine check up. I distinctly reminded him not to let them give her the flu vaccine. Well… he forgot. She was sick as a dog for days with fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, you-name-it. This time I made sure I took her for her check-up. Flu vaccine? No thank you. I’ll take my chances. Just like H1N1….yeah, that was a necessary vaccine. No thank you. I know someone who had their child vaccinated for that & ended up with neurological problems. People need to research what is being used to manufacture vaccines. Sometimes the chances of becoming ill as a result of a vaccine (particularly if there hasn’t been enough studies on the effects), are greater than the risk one takes if not vaccinated. With all due respect to Dr.s, as a parent I will use my judgement as to what I deem necessary to administer to my child.
#1 – But the benefit outweighs the risk. This seems to be a concept not commonly known in the Frum community.
#3 -“Sometimes the chances of becoming ill as a result of a vaccine (particularly if there hasn’t been enough studies on the effects), are greater than the risk one takes if not vaccinated.”
You just proved my point! The chances are Not greater. It’s the other way around. And almost all vaccines are studied for side effects. The Flu shot has been studied extensively. Where did you pick up this so-called “Science”?
never had a flu shot never got the flu. just wash your hands alot.
#3- if you ask any doctor they will tell you that the way the flu vaccine works is that they anticipate the most common types of flu that will be strong this year and that’s what they vaccinate against. However, since there are a lot of different strains of flu, it’s always possible to pick up another type somewhere and come down with the flu. Before you tell people NOT to get the shot, do some more research.
I am very pro vaccination but I heard from the nurse at the pediatrician that even she thinks there is no point in them…
When my child was about 5 months old he was running a very high fever etc. they thought he had meningitis. In the end he tested positive for the flu. The (not so) funny part was that the hospital admonished me for not vaccinating him and that year, I actually had!
How many times did you give your child the shot and how old is the child? The shot does not protect 100% and based on the childs age the doctor will recommend more then one shot. The reason that children who are not vaccinated don’t get sick with terrible illnesses that not so many years ago people died from is because there are fortunately enought parents with brains that do vaccinate. And unfortunately the spread of such illnesses happen to even vaccinated children(who are not 100% protected) because you have uneducated people who think they are smarter then the doctors who spent years in medical school. So if you didn’t give the shot and your child didn’t get sick thank your neighbor who did give the shot. And if your child felt sick after the shot you can only imagine how sick they would have felt had they gotten a full course of the flu. We are so lucky to have shots for certain terrible illnesses that we dont appreciate them enough. Ask your fathers and grandfathers about the kids that died in their classes from sicknesses B”H we dont know of today.
Sorry but all the chachomim who became doctors overnight and are very against vaccinations need to know how come these epidemics of the black plague and small pox that wiped out millions of people don’t exist anymore? Can it be that vaccinations work and the few fools, yes – fools who want to believe all the conspiracy theories that vaccinations cause neurological problems need to be examined as they’re causing others to be at risk….(not to say their own children)
please! the shot doesnt protect 100% against the flu and it has its fair share of side affects every year. each person commenting has no right to put down someone who does or doesnt give the shot. people can be allergic to it and there are other health reasons why people wouldnt vaccinate with this specific shot. i have no idea why this information needs to be posted-to make people panic about it?
Can you imagine that I got the flu when I was pregnant and nothing happened to me !?!?!?! GASP….. I was in bed for a week and than b’h I recovered and my child was fine b’h.
When doctors don’t think beyond what they are told in medical school and beyond what the drug company funded studies tell them and don’t use their own eyes and brains to see what’s going on then you have a problem.
One other thing my children had chicken pox ?!?!?! another GASP. and b’h they recovered like we all did when we were younger.
When you start lumping together all vaccines and describing all the illnesses that you can possibly vaccinate against as terrible diseases that’s when the doctors lose the trust of patients and parents. You’ll be hard pressed to convine me that chicken pox is a terrible disease… it’s actually a terrible disease to be vaccinated against because your immunity from vaccination is not 100% and therefore you can still get chicken pox as an adult which is much worse.
USE YOUR BRAINS DO YOUR RESEARCH. ASK DOCTORS QUESTIONS. right now some docotors don’t give you enough time to ask questions and they may like it this way because if you did ask half the questions you should you would get some unsatisfactory answers. I did and I have and that is why I take a different approach to this topic.
DO NOT GO LIKE A LAMB INTO THE DOCTOR AND ALLOW THEM TO DO ANY MEDICAL PROCEDURE WITHOUT DISCUSSING AND EXPLAINING TO YOU. NOT ALL MEDICAL TREATMENTS ARE APPRORIATE FOR 100% OF THE POPULATION.
Ask your doctor if he/she ever saw a vaccine injury and to please describe it. If your doctor has never seen a vaccine injury get yourself a new pedicatrician because even the drug insert says that for some vaccines the injuries are 1 in 1,000.
I had a pediatrician in Lakewood tell me that the former version of the DTaP (DTP) was causing alot of problems. Even the drug companies admitted to it and supposedly produced a safer version. Ask your doctor about this, ask, ask, ask. Who says that in 10 years from now they won’t come out and say this version was also bad so here’s a new version.
Some vaccines may be necassary for most children but some clearly are not and are causing damage!!!!
Kids that don’t get vaccinated on time or at all are healthier because their immune systems are not being bombarded with toxic waste (aluminum, formaldehyde and yes thimersol (mercury) ) from when they are two or three weeks old.
Its not paniciking its education. The ones who do not give shots probably wouldn’t have taken the shot for polio.
polio a deadly disabling disease which killed hundreds and thousands, want to go back to that chas v’sholom?
To #7: I DID DO MY RESEARCH & that is precisely why I chose not to give my child a vaccination for H1N1. You seem to have difficulty in comprehending my comment. I in no way suggested that nobody else get vaccinated. I simply stated my opinion & that people should do their homework when it comes to medicating yourself or family. If you were to research certain vaccines, you will find that indeed they contain dangerous toxins. I, personally never had the flu shot & never had the flu. It all comes down to cleanliness. The reason why so many Jews were spared from the black plaque was because we are commanded to wash our hands before eating. It all comes down to common sense and a personal choice. Thank goodness we, as Americans are still able to chose what we want to put into our bodies. Sadly, the way things are going, it won’t be that way much longer.
BTW- OY- we’re not talking about polio. That’s a given. The comment was in reference to certain specific vaccines. Nobody said anything about avoiding the polio vaccine. That’s just ridiculous.
It is unadulterated chutzpah to act like fine upstanding doctors are too stupid, uneducated, lazy or “greedy” to educate themselves about vaccines. No matter what your opinion or whatever is, you really need to moderate your tone.
And to the lady who survived pregnancy with the flu and chicken pox. I’m glad for you. There are others who can tell a different story.
Also there are many diabetic children for example, for whom all “regular” sicknesses, (flu, strep, chicken pox, mumps…)pose a greater risk. The parents of those children will obviously feel differently about their children being exposed to yours. May Hashem grant you and your family and klal yisrael years of good health, but hishtadlus is certainly a reasonable option.
By law, doctors are REQUIRED to inform you of the risks of taking a vaccine before administering it.
Please raise your hand if you ever got ANY such information prior to administering yourself or your baby.
(yeh I know some knucklehead will post later that that is because there are no risks – well haha very funny, here I said it for you).
I don’t think anybody suggested that people not get vaccinated. They are merely opinions. And yes, there are vaccines that have not been thoroughly tested. That is a fact, particularly regarding the H1N1 vaccine. All you have to do is look it up. You’d be amazed by the amount of poisons that are in some vaccines. As far is polio is concerned. Nobody said anything about avoiding that particular vaccine.
it’s always interesting to see which people are allowed to post several comments & others are not posted at all. why? could it be the truth hurts?
1. Neurological problems due to vaccines are not “conspiracy theories”- they are fact. (do you even know the definition of conspiracy theory?) There are plenty of testimonials from parents whose children suffered terrible consequences as a result of certain vaccines. Seek & ye shall find. Coincidence? I think not.
2. Just because someones opinion is different from others they should be called stupid or fools?
3. Who posted a comment about Doctors being “greedy”, “stupid”, “uneducated”? That is putting words in peoples mouths & is wrong.
4.I think all of the bashers need to”moderate THEIR tone” & accept the fact that people are entitled to their own opinion.
Wow! Who knew that a flu shot could lead to such bickering? A leetle bit ov Shlivovitz, a gitte cheeken zoup – gleich nuch Shacharis – and you villl live until aheendreed und tsvonsig!
12.Medical school … Use your brains says:
“Can you imagine that I got the flu when I was pregnant and nothing happened to me !?!?!?! GASP….. I was in bed for a week and than b’h I recovered and my child was fine b’h.”
Yes and can you imagine being pregnant and the kid dying Ch’vs because you didn’t get the shot? So don’t bring any proof from yourself.
“When doctors don’t think beyond what they are told in medical school and beyond what the drug company funded studies tell them and don’t use their own eyes and brains to see what’s going on then you have a problem.”
At least they have some education -Do You?
“One other thing my children had chicken pox ?!?!?! another GASP. and b’h they recovered like we all did when we were younger.”
Yes and can you imagine the kid dying Ch’vs because they didn’t get the shot? So don’t bring any proof from yourself.

Who says it’s much worse? Btw, it’s a terrible disease for those that die and get severe complications from the Chicken Pox.
“USE YOUR BRAINS DO YOUR RESEARCH. ASK DOCTORS QUESTIONS. I did and I have and that is why I take a different approach to this topic.”
You haven’t done any real research, in spite of your claims.
“Some vaccines may be necassary for most children but some clearly are not and are causing damage!!!! ”
False. The benefit outweighs any risk in almost all cases!
“Kids that don’t get vaccinated on time or at all are healthier because their immune systems are not being bombarded with toxic waste (aluminum, formaldehyde and yes thimersol (mercury) ) from when they are two or three weeks old.”
Its parents who nebach have a child who is autistic and desperately seek someone to blame that spread nonsense about vaccines.
We as maaminim know that the torah commands us to listen to doctors and do reasonable hishtadlus by vaccinating against serious diseases like whooping cough that has killed yiddishe kinder recently.
Hashem is the one who decides which child should be autistic- our job is to have bitochon and do the right thing-ie. vaccinate!
I am over 60 and I never had the flu shot, or the flu. I avoid doctors like the plague and just because I don’t have a medical degree, doesn’t mean I don’t know anything about keeping healthy and what is and isn’t safe. My children rarely went to the doctor for sick visits and I had them take plenty of vitamin C, do regular hand washing and used garlic a lot in various ways (fresh garlic, by mouth, or a poultice on the feet )and it cured pretty much everything. They all had the chicken pox, and their cases were mild. I think all the over medication this generation is being dosed with makes for weaker constitutions and susceptibility to illness. I do get colds sometimes and I am susceptible to inflammation due to varicose veins but, I have stuff I take for that condition and B”H I’m doing okay. I keep myself informed through reading all about health and what to do for what ails you. Several times when I took my kids to the doctor or I had to go once, I told the doctor what was wrong and the doctor misdiagnosed the ailment and I was right. So just because someone went to medical school it doesn’t mean he knows everything and that just because someone didn’t go to medical school it means he knows nothing. So no flu shots for me or my family, No thank you.
I’m “on the fence” with this one. There are doctors and nurses who have refused the shot, stating that they’ve witnessed horror stories from them. I did have the flu once when I was younger; I never want to go through that again, I think it would have killed me if I was older at the time. Still, don’t think I’ll get one this year. They frightened everyone last year, and ran out of shots. People panicked.
You obviously don’t know what on earth you are talking about!!!! If you did, there would be no way that you would claim the facts mentioned above regarding what is in certain vaccines as “falsehoods”, You need to be schooled in what our government is suggesting we put into our bodies. It’ quite simple. RESEARCH IT!!!!! Don’t post comments about subjects you know nothing about!!!
And I suppose nobody believes that all of these vaccines are connected to the incredible rise in Autism? Naaaah, just another “falsehood”, right?
if people were to wash their hands properly, cover their mouths & wipe the snot off their kids faces they would be less likely to spread germs.
your body, do what you want – but don’t preach about a subject which you obviously know little or nothing about. Toxins ARE present in many vaccines. Not a “falsehood” – FACT!!!
everyone is entitled to do what they think is proper for themselves and their families. why are we fighting? please stop. achdus please
#8 – a 5 month cannot get the flu vaccine. How could he have been vaccinated?
To those of you against vaccines– I should introduce you to some of my patients– those children who had to have body parts amputated due to flu, those with severe neurological impairments because their mothers contracted the flu during pregnancy, and those who sadly died due to flu. It’s not a joke. Yes, most people recover fully from the flu. But sadly more people (specifically kids) will suffer from severe complications of the flu than will suffer severe complications of the flu shot. These doctors have no hidden agendas. We’ve just seen too much.
“guess what says:
And I suppose nobody believes that all of these vaccines are connected to the incredible rise in Autism? Naaaah, just another “falsehood”, right?”
That’s right; it’s Not True. It’s called a Consipracy Theory. Shomer Pissayim Hashem.
I am eating fresh garlic daily among other immune boosters. If it causes people not to come too near me, all the better, as I am less likely to catch something from them. It is the best natural antibiotic, antiviral commodity out there, and for those who like it, tasty too. (also good for lowering cholesterol, regulating blood sugar, prevent blood clots etc.)
