Dr. Ari Krug is a popular orthodontist in Lakewood, NJ, whose son, Shukie, is a beloved talmid at Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael. Dr. Krug shared his thoughts as a proud parent of the yeshiva. How has your son benefited from Ohr Yisrael?
Dr. Krug: Shukie has been fortunate to form a close relationship with his rabbeim and the rosh yeshiva. He appreciates the structure of Ohr Yisrael, where each talmid is able to grow individually from his personal connection to the rabbeim. The hanhalah’s down-to-earth approach relates to the bochurim in a very practical way, helping each boy explore his own path in Yiddishkeit. This has allowed Shukie to grow and utilize his kochos.”
What guided your decision to send your son to attend yeshiva in Brooklyn?
A relative of one of Shukie’s friends is on the staff of the yeshiva, and when we heard what Ohr Yisrael is all about, we felt that this is the type of yeshiva and environment where a bochur can truly shteig. Rabbi Zucker is able to bring this out of every talmid, ensuring that a bochur is growing and being matzliach there. This is what makes Ohr Yisrael a unique find.
As Shukie will tell you, he’s very much a “homebody.” He’s close to his family and siblings, and it was a big move to go to Brooklyn. But it’s been wonderful. He’s enjoyed the independence provided by the experience and really grown into a ben Torah who is flourishing in the special atmosphere of this wonderful yeshiva.
Shukie will likely go to learn in Eretz Yisroel at some point before pursuing a professional career, perhaps in medicine, but no matter what his next steps are, he will continue to gain from the special kesher he has forged with Ohr Yisrael and its hanhalah.
Dr. and Mrs. Ari Krug will serve as honorees at the Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael 20th Anniversary Dinner at Kingsway Jewish Center on June 5th.
