John F. Bonamo, MD, MS, FACOG, FACPE, has been named Chief Medical Officer of Barnabas Health. Dr. Bonamo has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) since 2001.
He will begin in his new role effective January 1, 2015. Thomas A. Biga, Barnabas Health Executive Vice President of Operations, will serve as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of SBMC, while a national search is conducted. Mr. Biga has been with Barnabas Health or one of its affiliates since 1993. He has served in his current role for the last 5 years, with responsibility for the oversight of system hospitals, post-acute services and clinical product lines.
Dr. Bonamo is a physician executive with a distinguished clinical background in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Earlier this year, Dr. Bonamo assumed the responsibility of Barnabas Health Quality Officer, leading the Quality Council and Quality Forum, and steering the advancement of system quality and safety programs.

Dr. Bonamo joined the SBMC Medical Staff in 1981, upon earning his Medical Degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and completing an internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at SBMC. For the next 18 years, he maintained a busy private practice and was a highly respected obstetrician and gynecologist. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1997, he received the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education.
During his tenure as an attending physician, he was a medical staff leader and participated on numerous committees, including serving as President-elect of the Medical Staff, President of the Saint Barnabas MetroWest Independent Physicians Association, President of the Saint Barnabas Physician Partnership, and Clinical Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2000, he left private practice to serve as the Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs at SBMC.
Dr. Bonamo received his Master of Science in Health Care Management from the Harvard School of Public Health, where he is currently an adjunct lecturer in the Health Policy and Management Department. Since 2006, Dr. Bonamo has been a faculty member of the Beijing University International Management Program, teaching in both the United States and the People’s Republic of China.
While a practicing physician, Dr. Bonamo was active in numerous societies in his field. Currently, he is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, of the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and is a member of the New Jersey Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.
