DPW: We’re Working As Fast As Possible To Clear Trees

DPW’s Supervisor Toni Arrechi tells TLS the Public Works Department is working as fast as possible to clean the downed trees from Hurricane Sandy and the storm following, which left hundreds of trees strewn along the roads around town, and trees cut up and left for pickup.

“There’s tons of it out there”, says Arrechi. “We had about 100 downed trees just in Ocean County Park itself”.

Arrechi says they have four crews working on the tree removal each day, utilizing every piece of equipment available.

The Supervisor says the quickest way to have the trees near your home picked up, is by having the logs cut into 2-3 foot pieces. Leaving long pieces makes it more difficult for the workers, and makes it more time consuming.

Arrechi also asks that residents placing their trees out to make sure they are not blocking the sidewalks and roads.

in the future all homeowners should have all these dead trees cut down BEFORE A storm comes so we dont have over 1000 trees all over the roads
yea it costs money to have it done but that is part of being a home owner

  2. @ #1 are you kidding me? NOT all the trees that came down were dead trees. @ #2, aw, disruptive tsk tsk we all are a little inconvienanced just have to suck it up and bear with it for a bit and @ #3, maybe if people would slow down just a tad bit there wouldn’t be a problem. Quit crying because things aren’t done the way you want and as fast as you want, slow down and give these people a break

  3. I’m sorry but if this was snow removal, they would get an “F” for their job! It has been nearly 2 weeks…this is disgusting…and if the trees are a little on the sidewalk, they get left. Only the branches that are blocking the street actually get taken away. It is very dangerous!

  4. hey central ave, get over yourself…DPW is doing a great job..Lakewood as a whole got crushed over a two week period, if u can do it better, go right ahead!!!

  5. homeowers are responsible to put all branches into a pile for pick up yet 2 weeks ago on shabbas we were walking on 14th street from case rd. all the way to the flashing light and many times had to walk in street because people didn’t clean up their fronts.

  6. Carasaljo Drive is a very narrow street, and when cars are parked and the trees that line the street it is impossible to get through.

  7. If I was in charge, all the trees would have been cleared already.
2 weeks to clear a hundred trees? It took 1 week to clear 3 trees from N. Lake Dr.

  8. People in this town really are idiots! This attitude has to stop. If you think it can be done better, move back to Brooklyn, where most of us hail from. There it was way better (not)! This was a HUGE storm, the recovery isn’t overnight.

  9. To all the people that are complaining….. I have been working in long branch, rumson, sea bright etc. And I must say those of you who are complaining should be grateful that Lakewood doesn’t look like those other towns and be grateful for what you have

  10. Toni Arrechi you are doing a great job!!!! This has been an impossible task and you and DPW have stepped up to the task. You are picking up trees and at the same time doing all the other jobs without missing a beat.

  11. To my neighbor on Central Ave. We live on a County Road. Its the County that is responsible for removing our trees. I called them and they picked up mine.

  12. I wonder where OEM and Chaverium are now? Even the National Guard? Gee, all of a sudden those volunteers are gone! Oh, only for a select few I forgot. Thank you DPW. The ones who choose to complain about trees being removed let that be your worst complaint in life. Maybe you would like to switch a day with someone who has nothing but a tree left of their life. Think before you speak about others who really had the disaster and not Lakewood of only inconvenienced. Say thank you to the workers it goes a long way with just words.

  13. You are doing a great job. However, please clear Carasaljo Drive of leaves and branches. The residents have thrown all the debris into the road and it is so dangerous. I wonder if an inspector or police have traveled that street. It is impossible for two cars to get through. What with double parking, debris and vans pulling in and out from the first house haphazardly, and no side walks so people walk in the middle of the street, it is an accident waiting to happen!
