DPW Drops Second Truck As Result Of New Recycling System

recycling bins new in useA second truck has been dropped from the route as a result of the new yellow, single-stream recycling system, DPW Director John Franklin tells TLS. The driver, who has been eliminated from the route as the new system becomes more efficient, has been assigned to another job. “It’s really a win-win situation” Mr. Franklin said in April after taking the first truck of the roads, saving the Department money.

At this time, most residents should have received their new yellow bins.

last week, a regular recycling truck from the blue can days pulled up to my house. A guy got off the back of the truck, picked up the yellow can and manually emptied it into the back of the truck. Can anyone explain this?

its a great money saver——-make the garbage cans bigger too–the dpw could pick up once a month instead of once a week

Bottom line is that the cans are yellow. And that is a travisty.

I remember when the cans were blue, it blended in well, it wasnt stinking [sic] out like a sore thumb.

The only draw was the size, so the city officials decided that Lakewood needed larger cans to accomidate the recycible trash.

But there was one guy who insisted on it being yellow. Yellow? whatever for? but dark clouds began to form and it was only a matter of time before the city would take drastic steps to assure the blue be removed and the yellow installed.

The city would never be the same. The glaring yellow caused motorists to flare up, and shoot outs were not uncommon in those days. It all came to ahead when there was an election shortly after, and the Senator took a beating.

People gave all kinds of theories as to why the Senator lost so much clout, but few realised the real reason. The change in can color.

The Senator did however manage to cling to a minute majority and stayed in power, but the die had been cast and his remaining time in power was short lived. Six months later, he fell from politics and a new Senator (along with many new officals) came to the seen.

But they too neglected to take the issue seriously and the yellow sin stayed.

It wasnt till ten years later………………..

Because of lack of space in the front of the units, Coventry has been given an exemption to the yellow bins.
Who else got this exemption?
But, who really cares? Many do not even recycle, or do it very sparsely.
Some of the green cans are bulging over, every week. Maybe if those persons would try to do more recycling, then their cans would not be so overflowing.

I think DPW should get a reward.

In reference to the poster above who saw the old fashioned method of collecting recycling used on the new yellow cans, did the thought that maybe the new trucks used to collect said containers break down? Also I know on some streets it’s not possible for the newer trucks to collect garbage because of the extremely narrow nature of said streets. Want an example? From 4th street to 9th the truck that collects the refuse in that area is a older style truck utilizing the mean on the back.
