DPW Superintendent On Flashing Stop Signs: They’re Effective But Expensive

tony arrechi and frank workDepartment of Public Works Superintendent Toni Arecchi says the idea of installing flashing stop signs is a good one, but the cost of equipment is preventing the township from implementing them. “The township has looked at these type of solar and electric warning signs for Stop sign and crosswalk applications. They are effective but unfortunately they are expensive”, Arecchi said in an email statement to TLS, in response to an earlier article.

Arecchi says the base models start at $4,500 per unit.

“They do have a viable application at dangerous intersections”, Arecchi says, but says the decision is ultimately the Township’s.

“The DPW does not make the determination as to what sign is used, we are only the labor to install them”, Arecchi says. “LPD and the Township Committee make the ordinances for Traffic Control Devices”.

  1. yes thats what we need. are you kidding , we have cut and cut and cut why you ask ?? so we can buy light up stop signs. what is wrong with this town ?

  2. i just looked , a flashing stop sign is 2529.99 each… i will try to attach a link to a place that sells them if TLS lets me add it so you can see what a bad idea this really is.

  3. They see the traffic signs as they are. Some people feel it’s optional. For everyone’s sake: Take a refresh of the DMV driving manual and commit to it. (Can you even find yours?)

Be responsible to do everything you can in order that you, your fellow drivers and pedestrians of all types, feel safer in a civilized traffic environment.

Be courteous, slow down, relax. It says it all! Because at the end of the day…

Hashem knows exactly when you must arrive at your destination!

  4. I see my last post was deleted. All I said (like a good businessman would) the signs are bought for $1600 and sold to Lakewood for $4500. This is the way things are done today. Why do you think NASA pays $7000 for a toilet seat or $700 for a hammer? Why do you think the price of oil is so high? The middleman makes the money.

  5. no one in this town stops for stop signs. We need to go solar like every other town in the world. Put up cameras for violators and give out tickets

  6. You all talk about the cost in other states…do you account for shipping, installing and doing the hook ups for the lights..then having someone or 2 people repairing those signs when one of our 92K residents takes it out because they were not paying attention due to cell phone or other issues and runs them down? Perhaps that cost will fall on the person that breaks it to pay for the repairs..then we will see how much they are wanted in town
