In case you still didn’t get the feeling that summer was coming to an end, the presence of school busses on our roadways may do the trick.
Many New Jersey schools will open their doors on Tuesday, September 8th and the flurry of school buses, parents dropping students off, and foot traffic generated by students heading to class may cause a few headaches. After a three-month hiatus, motorists may need a few days to get used to the old routine again.
“Many drivers forget that back-to-school can mean traffic congestion, especially when your route takes you near a school,” says Tracy Noble, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “School zone speed limits are in effect, there will be school buses stopping to pick up students and slowdowns on the roads to allow for students crossing the street.”
AAA Mid-Atlantic advises drivers to plan ahead.
•Build extra time into your morning and/or afternoon travel routine – this will save you the stress of having to rush to work because of traffic congestion
•Be prepared to stop for school buses – know the school bus laws in your state regarding when to stop
•Be alert for pedestrian traffic – nationally, thirteen percent of school children typically walk or bike to school
•Don’t drive distracted – texting or talking on your cell phone can take your mind and eyes off the road
•Be aware of and obey speed limits – especially in school zones
“One of the most important things to do to deal with an increase in traffic is to pack your patience,” says Noble. “Motorists have an important responsibility to make it safe for children to get to and from school safely.”
