Dog alerts Lakewood resident of early-morning burglar; Suspect nabbed

An alleged burglar is in custody, thanks to a Lakewood resident’s dog.

Just after 4am yesterday, an Edgewood Ct resident was awoken when his barking dog alerted him that someone was burglarizing his backyard shed.

“The man observed the suspect take a backpack leaf blower and weed-wacker,” Detective Liutenant Greg Staffordsmith says.

The suspect then left the area on foot, and the victim followed, while contacting the police department.

“He followed the unidentified man several blocks until he eventually lost sight of him near Martin Luther King Drive,” Staffordsmith says.

Arriving officers located 26-year-old Anthony Bivins, of Lakewood, in the area of Elm Street and Arlington Avenue. He was still in the possession of the lawn equipment.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with Burglary and Theft by Officer Jason Debartolomeis.
