In another case, I reviewed a client’s prior year’s transactions and found a $100,000 cash inflow incorrectly recorded as revenue. This amount was actually a loan repayment, but it had been categorized as income, leading to an inaccurate representation of the business’s financial health. Thankfully, the client’s tax accountant also flagged the inconsistency and excluded it from revenue, averting what could have been a $25,000+ tax overpayment. Beyond tax implications, this error inflated the net income and falsely indicated that someone still owed the business $100,000—a potential disaster when making business decisions.
